Description Yet another Counterdino...Still feel like I'm stumbling around in the dark with these guys, playing pin-the-horn-on-the-alternasaur. I think I liked the last one better. I'm happier with the tusks on this one, though, and I like the basic design better than that of the Choeropsauromorph ([link] ). It's been fun trying to synthesize the ceratopsian and artiodactyl skull anatomy, at least; they overlap in surprising ways.

Warthog x styracosaur hybrid, obviously (aesthetically/morphologically, that is--the Counterdinos are not true genetic chimerae in the same sense as many of my other creatures). Extrapolating from the conditions originally established for the Counterdino ecology, it's reasonable to assume that the tusks and other such craziness evolved from specialized nut- and fruit-cracking dentition. They now serve primarily as display features and weapons for intraspecific combat, though surely they have a practical secondary defensive function as well.

I don't know, I'm pretty disappointed with this one. I tried punching up the highlights for more dramatic value contrast, hoping to achieve a greater impression of depth, but I suspect I only lost subtlety instead. The Choeropsauromorph had more refined and nuanced shading; I wasn't happy with that at first, but in retrospect I think it led to a more dimensional and believable sense of modelling. Ah well, it's always a learning experience.

Interesting. Some paleontologists think ceratopsian may have had a rather hog-like life-style. [link]

GAH! I just wrote you a whole long e-mail and lost the entire goddamn thing when my inbox timed out on me.

I'm very hot and very tired...I'll try again later.

Hope you are well.

Styracosaurus somehow gets spikier. And it is totally cool too.

I'm going to echo Rob-Cavanna above and say that a full-body one of these would be awesome, especially that the porcine ridge of hair could be replaced by psittacosaurian quills...

Rob-Cavanna [2009-06-26 14:14:53 +0000 UTC]

It was meant to be!

Might advise against the 6 six horns fanning out behind the skull/shield (i know you know the right name for it).. Ultimately, I assume you'd like equal parts dino + warthog, and right now, leans more towards the saurian.

If you were to do the whole body, I would go totally warthog in shape, with dinosaurish skin, and use some spines along it's humpish dorsal ridge, in place of the trademark line of hair. Maybe with very hoof-like feet?

Hell, I kinda feel like taking a swing now.... bet Goldfinger has some hog anatomy in there....

Hey man, this looks great as usual! I apologize that I don;t have much to say about it at the moment, but the eye strikes me as giving it almost a parrot-like demeanour ... combined with the octopus pupil & the warthog horns, this thing is formidable! Ah! I just got an idea for a counderdino of this genre that I'll have to try to do myself. Not a great idea, just some mouth modification, maybe a horn 'moustache'

I love your hatching technique .. over AND under the whites! What materials are you using for this? I'd like to sit down and 'study' you when I have the time

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thomastapir In reply to whalewithlegs [2009-06-26 18:58:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Ben! This is another very simple technique utilizing minimal materials. There's nothing to it but black ink pens, white Prismacolor pencil, and *sometimes* TOMBO grayscale brush markers for the tones. The appearance of the black hatching "over" the whites is the result of the white pencil's relative transparency to the underlying ink hatching when the highlights are lightly applied. The one thing I'd warn against is applying the whites too early, because the wax pencil is impermeable to ink! (I know, duh, but I kept getting carried away when I was first doing these and had to learn the hard way.)

One of the nice things about it is that you can do these pretty much anywhere as long as you have a pad of toned paper, a pen and a white pencil. It's very portable but always makes me feel like I'm "Doing Art" rather than sitting there doodling in the margins of a spiral notebook or something.

hmm, that's some good advice. Mid-toned paper is a nice thing that I forget about.

Very nice, man. Your choeropsauromorph was cool too, but the design felt sort of...stunted and jagged. The shapes here flow much better. And, despite your self-deprecation, I think the shading on this one works fine. The tusks and horns especially look good. And that blue eye! It contrasts perfectly with the warmth of the rest of the image.

I know this may be a little beside the point, but... Why the cheek spurs? Just to add to the porcine appearance? (that's a perfectly acceptable reason. otherwise it might just look like a ceratopsian with weird teeth.)

I do like the whole idea of dinosaurs converging on modern animals. It leads to some interesting speculation.

thomastapir In reply to fractalxavier91 [2009-06-26 03:30:58 +0000 UTC]

It's one of the elements of convergence I mentioned between ceratopsians and the Suidae specifically...I'm not sure *why* ceratopsians had them, but they did:

Of course I accentuated/exaggerated them to reinforce the warthog assocations.

Hmm, so they did.... Odd. I really should brush up on my dinosaur anatomy in general, shouldn't I?

Perhaps they are there for extra muscle attach points? Maybe they chewed on some unbelievably tough foods.
