Description Aiight so I guess this is some kind of headcanon of everyone's favourite blue idiot buuuuut I don't have the writing aspect of this nailed down yet so I'll update this like tomorrow? (NOW!) with more information. In the meantime, sorry I didn't post for a while, hope you like the pic

(Also, I went with a kind of parchment-coloured background for this one? Give me a shout if it looks shit)

~~~~ EDIT TIME, BITCHES! ~~~~~
Aiight so this turned out a lot longer than I anticipated so buckle up, settle in, and grab your reading glasses, we're going on a ride.
After Spitfire stepped down form the Wonderbolts following a lifelong career of stunt-flying and racing, the position of captain was left open. Naturally, the team appointed Rainbow Dash, who, in the time leading up to this, had been improving her teamwork, creating new routines and show-stopping routines, as well as beginning to act as the good-cop to Spitfire’s bad-cop in how new recruits were treated. Despite desperately wanting the position, Rainbow never dreamed she’d get it so soon, having herself suggested Fleetfoot assume the position. Still, she takes to her new role like a fish to water, with Fleetfoot acting as her second in command to help her learn to ropes.
Unfortunately, though, being captain of the Wonderbolts is a big commitment; Dash has to spend a lot of time on base, keep track of the running of the facility, plan routines, book shows and appearances for the whole team, review applications, select new recruits, train new recruits, run trials. She’s a busy pony, far too busy to juggle both this and teaching at the Friendship Academy. She struggles by for about a year, then finally admits defeat and hands in her letter of resignation to Twilight, operating off the logic that she can always come back to teaching later in life, whereas she can only be a good captain in the here and now, before she gets too old and starts slowing down. Twilight is kind of disappointed by this, but understands how hard Rainbow’s worked to get this far, and how much being captain means to her, so she wishes her luck and sends her on her way.
Because there’s now nothing really tying Rainbow directly to Ponyville other than the odd friendship quest and her friends themselves, she decides to move her house closer to Canterlot, the city over which Cloudsdale more usually floats. It’s also a fair bit closer to the Wonderbolt training facility and, as a bonus, a couple of her friends from home already also live in Canterlot, namely Pinkie Pie and, (sometimes) Rarity. Of course, Rainbow does still visit Ponyville often, usually crashing with either Fluttershy and Rarity or Applejack and Spitfire when she does, but she’s still a busy pony so can’t visit quite as much as she’d like. Her job’s very demanding so, sometimes, even when she does have time off, she’s too tired to bother going all the way down to Ponyville. Because of this, she finds herself spending more time in Cloudsdale and Canterlot, hanging out with Pinkie and Joe and making a few new friends along the way.
One of these new friends is none other than Sunset Shimmer, the sort-of pupil of Princess Celestia and head of Equestria’s Technological Advancement Programme. At first, Sunset is kinda weirded out by Dash, because she sometimes forgets that she’s not the same Dash as the one on the other side of the portal, but soon the two are fast friends. They hang out at crappy bars that Pinkie won’t go to because she doesn’t drink, drag each other to rock concerts at every possible opportunity, and sit and snuggle and read adventure books when they’re both too tired to do anything other than bundle up in blankets and drink hot chocolate.
Before you know it, they’re dating, despite going through a rather long period of insisting they’re not whilst acting like they are. Their relationship is full of fun, punctuated by Sunset’s need to keep going back and to to the human world and Rainbow’s need to go stay at the Wonderbolt facility every now and then. When Rainbow has time off but Sunset doesn’t, Rainbow will often go across the portal with her, and the two acquire a nice little apartment for themselves; it turns out that the lovely shiny gold coins they both earn in Equestria are worth a pretty penny in the human world, and that’s to say nothing of the gemstones.
Despite how hectic their lives are, they decide to have themselves a couple of kids. Well, they decide to have one kid and see how it goes, but then Rainbow wants a pegasus so they end up with three. Their early relationship plan for children was to wait until both their jobs had calmed down and they had more time to devote to children, but it becomes apparent very quickly that that isn’t going to happen anytime soon. As such, it’s decided that Sunset can have kiddo number 1, and that she’ll have to not go through the portal whilst pregnant incase something goes wrong with the child.
Rainbow is certain they’re going to have a pegasus because no one in her family is any other race and neither of them know what Sunset’s family was like, but then child number 1 is born and she’s a unicorn and Rainbow pouts for days but loves her baby anyway. They decide to name her Glitz Blitz because they both think it sounds cool despite everyone around them telling them not to, and they love her very very much, but Rainbow does still kinda wish she had a little pegasus she could teach to fly.
With this in mind, Rainbow is the one to carry baby number 2 so as to, in her mind, increase the odds of having a pegasus. Because of this decision, though, Rainbow has to step down as the Wonderbolt captain. She hangs on in there for a bit and trains up her replacement, but does eventually have to drop completely. It’s sooner than she would have liked to step down, but she decides she’s had a good run, broken all the records she possibly could have, and would like to focus more on her family. Whilst knocked up, she then contacts Twilight, wondering if she could possibly return to teaching, and Twilight welcomes her back with open arms, but Dash and Sunset decide to still live in Canterlot. They circumvent Dash needing to fly (or take the train) back and to all the time by building a mirror-portal based off the one that leads to the human world. It’s the geekiest thing Dash has ever done and it takes them a while to get it right (they keep ending up in other dimensions), but they have it finished only a few weeks before baby number 2 is born.
It’s a unicorn again, and they call him Flashbang, but Dash thinks that two young children is enough for her to handle right now and they hold off on having child number 3 until the other two are a little bit older. ‘A little bit older’ however only turns out to be a couple of years, but, in the meantime, Dash keeps teaching at the Friendship Academy and Sunset keeps on with her research (though she makes more effort to be in Equestria more often now). When baby 3 comes into existence, Dash goes on maternity leave and … doesn’t come back. She gets the little pegasus she always wanted, but there’s a catch; Buccaneer Blaze is blind, so needs a bit more attention than the older two. Dash stops teaching again to take care of her family, and Twi again completely understands and assures her that a position will always be there for her if she wants to come back, but Rainbow never takes her up on the offer.
See, despite Bucc’s blindness, Dash is still determined to help her kiddo fly. She volunteers with junior flight school and summer camps to learn how to teach basic flying to young children, and works with a lot of special-needs groups to figure out how to circumvent Bucc’s disability. The result is that Bucc does learn how to fly at the basic level, but would much rather remain on solid ground.  Rainbow is disappointed, but understands (she made Sunset magically blindfold her in such a way as she wouldn’t be able to see for a day and hated every second of it; flying was terrifying). As much as she’d always secretly dreamed of teaching her kids to fly, Rainbow knows when to back off in this instance.
Of course, this doesn’t stop Rainbow from being kind of mopey for a while; she knows it’s selfish, but she can’t really help it. It’s only whilst she’s helping out at another flight summer camp and she helps a little colt get off the ground all by himself for the very first time that she realises it doesn’t have to be her own children that she teaches to fly. After this revelation, she nabs herself a permanent job as a flight coach, and she’s one of the best they’ve ever had. Turns out, Rainbow’s excitable attitude, celebration of success, and unwavering belief in people’s ability to be awesome is excellent for helping small children believe in themselves and be proud of their achievements. Rainbow also finds herself teaching these kiddos some very basic, very safe, Wonderbolt maneuvers, and that gives her an idea.
She gets in touch with the current Wonderbolt captain and suggests the idea of a Juniorbolts programme for kids who want to get into stunt flying but are too you to join any of the official teams out there. A few months later, the programme is up and running, using a floating island as a base so parents who aren’t pegasi can come and see their children practicing and performing. Rainbow is, of course, head of the programme, and pulls a few strings to get other retired Wonderbolts to come help out when they can. They also have a few non-bolt teachers for the beginner classes, but most of the staff were stunt fliers form various teams. The programme also takes in any kid that wants to join, and has several teams of differing ability, age, and speed. All the kids have their own little flight-suits that are colour coded in accordance with their team to make them feel more professional, and they sometimes do shows with the actual Wonderbolts.
Not every kid that is in the Juniorbolts ends up in the Wonderbolts; some lose interest in racing, some never had any interest in the first place and only did it because their parents wanted them to, and others just don’t make the cut in some cases, but there’s still a pretty good conversion rate, all things considered. Naturally, the Wonderbolts do still take on recruits that weren’t in the Juniorbolts, but any kid who wants to join the Wonderbolts usually joins the Juniorbolts first.
Rainbow enjoys her job immensely, and loves working with her old teammates. She also loves her family dearly and supports them all in everything they do; she may not understand Sunset’s magic or science, but she knows her marefriend is the beast at both and will fight anyone who says otherwise. She has no idea why Glitz is so into makeup and manestyling, but will sit for hours at her behest and be completely made over, had no idea what it is Flashbang even does, but will listen to him babble on about it for hours. She also respects Bucc’s need for independence and has complete faith in her baby to be able to function as any ‘normal’ pony would.
Maybe when she gets too old to keep up with all the little kids, Rainbow will retire from coaching and go back to the friendship school, but that day is a long way off. For now, she’s content to live in Canterlot and smooch her girlfriend and cheer their children on in their chosen professions.
