Edit: I've been painting more on this pic; consider the old one a work-in-progress. Now it has snow!
I might edit it again to add more shading...maybe. Anyway, I hope my snow effect's okay. 
Original Description:
A painting of Near I did randomly with my Wacom tablet.
It portrays him along the themes of a story idea I had in which he's a vampire, and gets people to let him into their homes by claiming to be lost in the snow and so cold...It usually worked.
Drawn in Photoshop CS2 with Wacom Graphire 4 tablet.
Near is from the anime/manga Death Note, and belongs to Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.

As with so many of my fanwork ideas, I started a fic, wrote a few scenes, and never wound up finishing it.

Sounds like you've got an interesting idea here, and your vampire lore seems acceptable to me (I'm quite particular about how I like my vampires done). I tend to demonize my vamps, and really make people go, "OMG!" when they do stuff just for the enjoyment of doing it...or so they can feel 'alive' again.
It kinda reminds me of an episode of Vampire Princess Maiyu (Is that how her name is spelled?). The series isn't great, but the episode was a good watch.

So how does it work in your story? Are the vampires the type that "infect" people when they bite them, so that the bitten person becomes a vampire when/if they survive (think Twilight) or does the vampire have to drink all their blood and give them some of his own to turn them into vampires(think Anne Rice novels)?

Somewhere in between, actually...my portrayal of vampires (I've used the same kind of rules for an Escaflowne fic of mine, "When You've Been Hurt, Too") is that they must drink human blood, that to embrace a human a vampire must drink some of their blood (not all of it, though) and then have the human drink some of theirs in return. After that they'll turn into a vampire. It's not exactly instantaneous, though.

(And vampire legends are all different. Some state that animal blood can be used as a substitute, some say only human blood. I haven't heard much about the 'tomato juice' one, though I think it would act more like a placebo. In some animes (like Trinity Blood), they have blood tablets, which can be dissolved into water to create blood. Basically, vampires need blood.

That reminded me of a show my friend and I started watching called Vampire Knight..She finished the whole thing and I lagged considerably..but it looks awesome to me..

XD I don't know what vampires YOU'VE been reading about, but generally they must have blood, and human blood at that. Some stories like to say they can drink animal blood, but in this story that isn't the case.

Although I read this one manga where the vampire hates human blood, so he has to constantly eat to keep his energy up. He'll just be walking along and then it's like "OMG NEED FOOD" and he runs to the nearest restaurant and orders the whole menu XD

In the Ann Rice vampire stories, they can drink the blood of rats and other vermin to sustain themselves in case of emergencies.

Yeah, I know some vampire portrayals have them able to drink animal blood.
I have never actually read any of the Anne Rice novels, but from what-all I've heard of them the vampires are portrayed too closely tied-in with religion (which I don't really care to write about in any detail), so I portray mine a little differently. I think having them able to drink blood takes away from the whole dilemma of HAVING to bite people, so in my portrayals only human blood really has the life force in it that they need.

I did like the movie "Interview with a Vampire" though.
My vamps are ususally evil...and hopelessly insane...

That's the other thing--the yaoi stuff wouldn't have been that bad, but incest and heavy religious themes on top of it are a turn-off.
I never saw "Interview With a Vampire"; I hear it's good, but didn't want to see it since it's Anne Rice. Anne Rice's vampires have this old, musty feeling to the portrayal...it's too constrictive, not "real" enough or something. I don't know...I just like to portray them how I wish, maybe that's it. XD;
Haha....my vampires usually aren't evil, just slaves to their need for blood. They're often so sick of living forever that it takes a human's perspective to remind them that living isn't a burden unto itself.

The point behind on character in interview is that he can actually change and adapt to the times, integrating himself seemlessly with the living, which attracts the attention of other vampires which don't appear to have that ability, and remain "old and musty" as you put. They refer to him as a vampire with a human heart...
Yeah, I've done that too...mostly because I love to torture my characters...
