Description These aren't all the differences the movies show from the books, but they're some of the most annoying ones.

My brother especially hates the character assassination of his favorite person in the book: Faramir.

Jackson was trying to make the situation seem more desperate than it was, so he ramped up the corruption of the Ring, made many of the leaders of the Free People more cynical and he either ramped up the size of the enemy armies or else reduced the size of the good-guy armies.

He also made undermined a lot of the good guy characters such as Aragorn, Gandalf, Theoden, Elrond and Faramir.

He reduced the heavily symbolic destruction of the Ring by the simple fate of Gollum getting careless and falling with something more cliche like Frodo stepping up and pushing Gollum off the edge.

The removal of the Scouring of the Shire and the Tom Bombadil scenes are regrettable but at least more understandable.

Good work! I love how you did it.

Only you forgot Arwen. I can't even bear the fact that Peter Jackson turned her into a Mary Sue.

Arwen is a symbol of hope in the movies. She and Aragorn have a love for each other that could never be. A very hopeless situation to where she either is denied to live with the person she loves or she does get to live with the person she loves but go for an eternity after Aragorn's death, lingering on for an eternity alone. Β She sacrificed her immortality because of the hope of some hobbit from a town a lot f people have not even heard of, will destroy evil once and for all. . .in all honesty, this is one of the few times that the movie was better than the books ._. (in my opinion of course)

No, the character they gave Arwen for the movie was not, in and of itself, bad or Mary Sue....it's just that this wasn't her story so she wasn't in it....I have another page about the women in Tolkien somewhere

At least the LOTR movies have more detail than the Percy Jackson movies(I saw The Sea of Monsters and it was okay)

My pet hate it the hobbits getting the swords ie Aragorn just gives them at weathertop, negating the whole barrow wights part.

I at least accept that THAT particular edit was potentially necessary for time-crunch concerns...I fully expected Bombadil to be cut from the story since that's the segment of the story that's closest to being non-sequitor

There are so many exclusions, and massive alterations. The death of saruman (in the extended edition)/imprisonment in return of the king left my jaw hanging.
"Wtf Jackson! What do you mean you're gonna leave his part off there, yet you found time to shove in some rubbish about Faramir trying to take the ring!"

Kinda negates the whole 'Gollum having his part to play before the end' subplot doesn't it

You should add: Tom Bombadil... In the books... not in the movies... T.T

That being said, a lot of things were done to make the bad guys more threatening and spread around the heroism through the entire fellowship. What happens when you have to condense such an enormous series into a few hours.

Tom Bombadil is sadly the only removal widely regarded as understandable by fans.

That's just because 'Saruman the Multicoloured' is selectively edited out of their brains.

Thank you for doing this. My dad has read all the books and complains whenever we see the movie about some parts. I'm sure this'll brighten his day!

He saw it and he really appreciated that someone went and took the time to mark down the differences between books and movies!

A nice summary, but I disagree on a point here and there. Also, you may want to consider adding Thorin to this list.

yeah...I opinionated in a couple of places...

uncertain of Thorin yet...though I believe in the book, Thorin is getting on in years, even for a dwarf
