I have a small somewhat philosophical story in mind which I may or may not make into a comic at some point in the distant future. If that happens, here's a sneak peak of it
So here we have something I've been wanting to draw for a LONG time, which is a smeet in one of the smeetery chamber thingies. As depicted in 'Parent Teacher Night', Irken smeets are grown in tubes. Here's a very Zim-like smeet inside such a chamber. I'm IN LOVE with this angle like...I'm amazed I could draw it from this perspective!
I feel like the background is at the wrong perspective, but whatever...smeets are actually very small so it kind of works out! I tried VERY HARD to make it look like he was submerged in some sort of fluid, but at the same time I couldn't blur out too much because it made it too hard to actually SEE my little baby irken there. But anyway, I love how he turned out! Let me know how you feel!

Psh, lame. Let cartoons get just a wee bit 13+ rated again please, you soft goons. One of my favorite shows was Courage the Cowardly Dog growing up. One scene gave me my first experience of repetitive nightmares. I'm still alive!

yeah I know. Courage the Cowardly Dog it's also Dark but it's not by Nickelodeon it's by Cartoon Network and also I read a Graphic Novel of Johnny Vasquez Johnny The Homicidal Maniac,Squee! & I Feel Sick and I read it and Oh my it's Very Violent and a lot of Swearing and it's a Adult Graphic Novel which it's Before Invader Zim a Kids Show.

This makes me think, was there EVER a time where the Irkens DIDN'T rely on PAKs????

There HAD to be, since their had to have been a time where they were first developing as organic fertile beings where they then advanced and developed technology beyond Earth's current technological state.
The only explanation I can think of otherwise is if another alien species had created Irkens in a lab, where they then possibly became an independent species and founded their own planet as their "home" planet. This theory is actually one I really like and I've put a surprising amount of thought into it... If true, the aliens that created them may have designed them so that they can't live without a PAK.

Your theory is interesting. The alien species that comes to mind, whom may have created them, are the Vortians!
Throughout the series the Vortians are constantly mentioned as they are one of the many alien species that have been implied to have always been under Irken rule and have CREATED IRKEN MACHINERY!
((In, "Backseat Drivers from Beyond the Stars," a Vortian prisoner gives Zim data on the Irken Massive and comments that his people created that ship.))

Oh man, that would be A HECK OF A TWIST considering Vortians are currently slaves to the Irken Armada! I definitely love the tangible irony of that theory, but the vortians seem so kind-hearted or at least non-threatening to me. They don't SEEM to be the type to create a slave race with the capacity to eventually decide to enslave the entire galaxy/universe with brute force and complete moral indifference. Not to mention, you'd think they would have a way to disconnect all the PAKs and either kill or command the Irken race if they were the ones who created it in the first place.

My own theory is this:
No other alien race created the Irkens, as they were a species ALL of their own from the beginning! At some point in time an Irken leader or two had to have had the idea that the Irkens should evolve into an empire so they decide to evolve their race into beings that are almost tireless and IMMORTAL, HENCE the PAKs.
However, your's is more fleshed out. X3 My theory is more based around an OC of mine~

Your theory makes the most sense canonically but my theory is just a whole bunch of AU junk meant to explain Irkens and their behavior a bit better...but it's more like an off-shoot

This is just... Wow. You gave the perfect sense of depth. And the submersion in liquid is very well portrayed. Not to mention the dark yet vibrant color scheme. I love the reflective areas on the walls of the containment unit. And the bubbles make it perfect. The smeets fascination at such a young age goes to prove their intelligence. I applaud this.

I was having a really tough time trying to make it look like the smeet was genuinely submerged in liquid (as opposed to floating) so this type of feedback is really helpful
