Designed by a man named Payat' Avtotisterna, the KV-PA was intended to be a stop gap tank until a better tank armed with an 85mm gun was introduced. The KV-PA was first accetped in early 1942, but production was slow, and only 25 where available for the Battle of Kursk where all by three where destroyed. By late 1942 production of the tank picked up pace, but due to the tank's high price tag, large size, complexity, and lack of mobility, the KV-PA was canceled in mid 1943 with around 350 built.
Payat' Avtotisterna would go onto design several more KV proposals until his death in late 1944 due to an infection from a serious cut.
