Def: In 1943 Stalin was abut to cancel all heavy tank projects as the KV-1s had no improvements over the T-34, but this was stopped when the Germans started to field Panther medium tanks, and Tiger 1 heavy tanks. A stopgap tank was developed by mounting a  new AA derived 85 mm gun into a new three man turret onto the KV-1s chassis, and 143 "KV-85" were built. Soon a new chassis based on the KV-1's with a hull that was inspired by the KV-13 was developed and the KV-85's turret was mounted onto the tank, and thous the IS-85(IS-1) was born with around 207 built with them being given to the 1st, 8th and 13th Guards Heavy Tank Regiments in Ukraine were they were heavily engaged in early 1944 at Starokonstantinov, Korsun-Shevshenkovskiy and Fastov Station west of Kiev. They were later used against the Slovakian free units during the uprising.
In the winter of 1943/44 the T-34 was up gunned with the same 85 mm gun as the IS-1 and thus the IS-1 saw the same problem as the KV-1, only slightly better armor protection, but worse mobility and shorter range. Unlike the KV-1s though the IS-1's turret could mount a bigger, and better gun, and the SU-100's main 100 mm gun was chosen and two "IS-100" prototypes went up against the IS-122 which mounted the A-19 122 mm gun. The 100 mm gun had better AP capacity, but the 122 had better all rounds performance, but had a slower reload due to it's two piece naval rounds. None the less the Is-100 was terminated and the IS-122 was accepted as the IS-2.
In 1944 the IS-2 was upgraded being armed with a better 122 mm gun that had a semi-automatic breech which reduced the loading. As well the front was now uniformly slopped which aided in protection. The IS-2 saw heavy action in the battle of Berlin and was in service for many years after the war as the IS-2M. Around 3,854 of all IS-2 models were built.
