------------------------------

He was not alone is his descent down to return to Gilgamarsh. Shame, anger, and even regret began to personify from within him.

The weight of his shame laid heavily on his broad shoulders. Acacia was hurt when he could have protected him. All those promises he had made to ensure Acacia's safety were all shattered and cast to the wind. How easily promises were made...how easily promises were broken. Just as Acacia had looked ashamed from not being able to protect himself, Akino felt the same mutual emotion in himself.

He regretted bringing him along.

If he had just given him a stern 'no.', that would have been enough to discourage him. He just couldn't stand the hurt look Acacia would express...like he always did. How reckless the altaria was. Refusing to look at anything that wasn't seen through rose colored lens. His optimism in the fact that the world was capable of being cleansed was foolish. There would always be darkness in the world. There would always be evil in the world.

His teeth bared and he forced his eyes shut.

His anger seemed to animate within his mind, snapping and snarling like a caged beast; cursing and howling, the echoes reverberating within his skull. Curved claws carving and rending into his own flesh, inflicted by his own accord from the cause of concealing his emotions. He needed to let it out. He wanted to kill Gilgmarsh more than ever now. So many suffered from his existence. The witch caused great pain and grief not only today but many other days prior to many other Pokémon. Something who had done so much damage had no right to live.

'The witch hurt him.'
'The witch would pay.'
'The witch...'
'Witch.'

--------

The battle against Gilgmarsh continued, the medical team rushing past hauling injured Pokémon, and only a few coming down the slope returned into the fray. His gaze narrowed and he began to step towards Gilgmarsh, his roar piercing the air and causing a few to flinch at its intensity. Despite some being startled, each mon returned to battle.

All but one.

Akino's gaze landed on a female lanky fennekin who seemed to have yet to step onto the slime. Her gaze was fixed on the battle, eyes wide and unblinking, tail tucked and body lowered. Her paws were mere centimeters from the muck, teetering on the edge of what could have been her grave and many other mons as well. She watched with subtle flinches as Pokémon were sent flying or struck with an attack, however her inaction showed she was not about to race in and help the guild.

He didn't recognize her from the attack team briefing and hardly looked like she was willing or capable of killing anything for that matter. She was scared of something, and though the obvious factors were Gilgamarsh and even death, he had the creeping suspicion it was something else as well. Despite fears, this was no time to succumb to them, and he wasn't about to let her standby as everyone else risked their lives for a better future.

"Hey." He called lowly, his voice only slightly louder than his average speaking voice, however even that seemed to startle the fennekin who jolted faster than his eyes seemed capable of following. She looked up to him, the younger mon silently staring at him, anticipating his next words as if fearing what they would be.

Perhaps her fear was rightfully placed.

"What team are you on." He asked, needing to connect a few dots before he could say anything in particular about her absence. Her eyes shifted and she hesitated as if she didn't want to answer the simple question, but eventually, she did. "U-um...S-Suppression..." The shiny electrike's eyebrows furrowed and gave an audible and even loud huff. "Of course you are. No wonder why you aren't fighting." He stepped closer, the fennekin seeing his advance as a threat and immediately stepped back the same amount he stepped forward.

"I know that your objective isn't to kill the witch, but that doesn't mean you can stand by and let Gilgamarsh just hurt so many Pokémon." He spoke to her, anger lacing his tone, yet did not step any further. The reaction he received was not exactly what he was expecting from the timid fox. Her eyebrows narrowed ever so slightly and she rose from her crouched position, even if it was just a little bit. "W-we don't have t-to kill h-him!" She raised her voice slightly as if it would change his viewpoint on the matter, however that was not the case. "There are plenty of you on the suppression team who think that. It makes me sick." He practically spat out the words as if they sat bitterly on his tongue up until that point.

Peach's ears lifted briefly in alarm before they went back down.

"It seems you all have forgotten the damage that witch had done to this land, yet you insist that it lives." His hackles rose and his teeth clenched. All the Pokémon he has hurt directly on the battlefield and in the far reaches of the land with, or without intention were dependent on the guild's to avenge them. Perhaps not all of their views were the same in believing his death was necessary, but it was to him. His gaze rested on the fennekin who was avoiding eye contact with him, his piercing red eyes not faltering despite her obvious submissive behavior.

"With all my encounters with witches, although few, it would be best if they were gotten rid of altogether."

"N-NO! Y-you're wrong!!"

Her sudden shout caught him off guard, the previously timid fennekin now stood at full height and locked her eyes with his, teeth clenched and eyes watering. "N-Not all witches a-are bad!" Despite the courage she seemed to gain, Akino did not admire it, he merely saw her words as a threat and snapped back "I don't care if there is such a thing as good witches! This one is not one of them and therefore must be killed!" Without even a moment's hesitation, she snapped, the tears that accumulated in her eyes finally pouring out down her cheeks. "STOP! Y-YOU'RE WRONG! YOU'RE WRONG!" The same words continued to flood from her lungs, the words soon running together into incoherent babble. Her body quaked with shakes and soon bunched up away from him as if she now viewed him as more of a threat than Gilgamarsh. The electrike's eyes widened slightly at her unique reaction, feeling some wind being taken from his sails.

No, he had to beat it into her.

"I'm not wrong." He spoke simply yet firmly, lowering his head as if to get eye level with her. The words coming from her lips were completely illegible and very easily capable of being talked over now so he took his chance. "Sadly this is what the real word is! You either let it do what it wishes with you, or you stand up and show them you just won't stand there and take it!" His voice began to rise louder, the fennekin's eyes dilating at his increasing volume. "Gilgamarsh is an evil witch who has no right to have a choice on the outcome of his life! He needs to die!"

"So you want me dead too?!"

He heard her words, yet his eyes lacked understanding as he looked the fennekin over. Her mouth was clamped shut now as if she wished she could reach into the air and force the words back into her maw but it was far too late. His jaw lacked mobility to move for the longest time, both just staring at each other, waiting to see if the other was to make a move or say something. His mind finally seemed to clear and his eyes went half-lidded, realization finally lighting in his pupils.

She was a witch.

He recalled speaking to Acacia, saying that it was unlikely all witches were evil. But if they were...was this kid evil? She didn't look like she was. Her hair tangled and messy. Eyes wide and scared. She had to be the least threatening thing he must have ever seen. Maybe he shouldn't assume she is weak. Assumptions almost always led to mistakes.

He looked down at her, the girl still quivering as she remained in the wake of his vision.

He could have comforted her. He could have gently attempted to calm her down from her state of panic and ensure he wouldn't hurt her, even if she was indeed a witch. Could have- may have been the wrong choice of words. He knew it would have been the right thing to do, but he was inexperienced with doing so. He didn't know how to calm her down. He couldn't even calm himself down when upset. "No- Look-."

He didn't even know where to begin.

"N-no! L-eave....l-leave me a-alone!" Peach suddenly stood, tears still dripping from her eyes and quickly stepped as if to shove past him, but the electrike sidestepped directly in front of her and lifted a paw and pushed it out in a stop motion. Before he could even open his maw to speak, her body went rigid at the sight of his raised appendage and she shot down and braced for the chance his paw was about to swing and hit her. His red eyes widened, muffled sobs sounding from her, paws clasped over her muzzle and eyes shut tight.

What...has this kid been through?

He knew the effects of emotional abuse when he saw it. He knew it all too well.

He stepped back and away from her, knowing nothing he could say could help. He watched as she remained still, as if she was still waiting for the blunt strike to meet her head, or even worse teeth dig into her flesh. However, it never came. Her head slowly lifted to note that the shiny electrike was no longer in front of her and in an instant, shot forward to run from him. No hesitation, no eye contact, just the sole desire to get as much distance between her...and the Pokémon who continually told her that she should be okay with killing someone.

"..."

The battle which had previously seemed to be white noise, roared to life once more as if the end of the conflict just switched the fight back on. He turned to look to see if the fennekin was still running off, but she was nowhere in sight. Either she was extremely fast on her own, or the adrenaline pushed her that far...perhaps both. His intention wasn't to scare her, but it seemed to be a reoccurring event that continued to happen with him. He closed his eyes and thought back to Acacia, some of his previous anger returning to him. Gilgamarsh hurt him. Gilgamarsh hurt hundreds of innocent Pokémon. He needed to get revenge...but from the back of his mind, he knew there was doubt.

Could he actually be okay with taking a Pokémon's life?

Sonya learned what Akino realized now too late.

Its not easy to figure out the fine line between good and evil, but there is one. We just have to pay close attention. And anger and fear can cloud that vision.

Good read. Awesome

Thank you! And I'm glad you found that in the text! Death has a consequence not only on the one killed, but the one doing the killing.

That's Sonya's life in a nutshell. She killed witches as a hunter for a good few years.

By the time she realized what she and her clan had done, she ran.
She'd definitely agree and say Akino is stronger than her for realizing right away that killing what we think as evil is the solution when it's not ^_^
