Description Taken at Rockefeller Park Greenhouse - Cleveland, OH

While scoping out the Greenhouse for a portrait session, I saw this single gardenia blossoming outside in the sun. The entire plan was beginning to fade and the few blooms left on it were losing petals fast but this little girl was hanging on tenaciously, not willing to give up its beauty just yet. I love the smell of gardenias, it always reminds me of my mother who usually has a perfume that she wears that smells like gardenia, and they are such a beautiful yet delicate flower that's elegant in design.

As always when photographing something light against a background that is either dark or you want dark, the camera tries to even things out and so you end up with an uninteresting background and a light flower that is too bright. For this shot, I knew I wanted to get the dark background and so would need to under-expose it. So I set it to -2/3EV (or -.7 on my camera) and took the shot and was happy that the background went nice and dark and the underexposure brought out some rosy yellow tones to the gardenia.

I have to admit that I'm a chronic under-exposer..I like getting deeper shadows by stopping it down a stop or two. And of course there was always the happy accident so many years ago of Sunshine Kitty [link] that taught me that metering off of the brighter subject helps to speed up the shutter speed to get the nice black background. Photography is always fun when things turn out how you plan!

I used the same technique on this [link] and loved the results.

This is splendid! The lighting is spot-on, and really shows the soft delicacy of the flower. I also like the hints of green leaves in the black background. It really makes the bloom stand out.

Thank you!! It was one of those shots when I got it I knew I'd hit it spot on which always feels really good. It's better than clicking and hoping like I used to do!

Great shot! Is there a diff between using exp. comp. and adjusting shutter and/or apeture?

I'm not quite sure what is compensated when shooting in Manual mode, but I often shoot in Aperture priority and then by using the EV compensation, it will adjust the shutter speed faster or slower depending on how I adjust it.

Thank you! I love getting to use negative space with light and shadowed objects when I can, especially when it happens in nature. And thanks! I'm excited, we start up in 10 days and it has me excited and nervous all at once.
