Description
This is an entrance table I made for my graduation exhibition this summer. Inspired by the work of Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky, I attempted to make a piece of furniture that would address some of the same issues Burtynsky deals with in his work. ...Those issues being the effects industry has on the envorinment and modified landscapes.The table is a narative piece that tells the common story of industry forcing its way forward in the name of progress and profit, only to cause irreversable damage to the enironment. Then, when they realise what they have done, they try and fix it. But no matter how shiney and fancy they make it look, it will never be the same.
Materials:
-a scrap I-beam salvaged from a highway being built beside my house (a perfect example of a modified landscape)
-a board of Elm from a company that salvages local trees that are being cut down and sells them as quality lumber.
-hand tooled and polished aluminum
-various nuts and bolts
Finished with a satin water based varathane.
Dimensions: 54"h. x 48"l. x 13"w.

Does the table function structurally :
a) with the wooden plank fixed with a concealed hinge joint in the wall
or
b) the plank being cantilevered and supported by the I-Beam which will be bolted into the flloor?

The wood is bolted to the I beam, which holds it pretty securely. Then there is a consealed support on the other end of the board that attatches to the wall to secure it and stop it from tipping over.

I had the beam first and didn't know what I was going to do, then I found that wood with the crack. A one in a million find if you ask me. Glad you like it!

though how did you get the wood through/ over/ attatched to the beam..??

thanks! i had to rout out the shape of the beam in the wood, then the wood slid down over the beam. there are some L brackets hidden under the board that attatch the two together.

This has to be one of the most unique pieces I've seen, and I love the symbolism behind it. Is the I-beam run through the board or is it cut in half and sitting atop the board

the beam runs right through it, there are small L brackets bolted on underneath to hold it together
