Description Oil on canvas. 20"x24".

My last and I feel, most complete interpretation of the song of the same name by Yes from the 'Close to the Edge' album.

When I listen to the song it reminds me of Winter sunsets in the softer, fantasy-inspired parts but the part at the end where the music moves fast and furious always sounded to me like a large flock of birds flying out towards me.
Also, Jon Anderson's lyrics inspire me: "... sing bird of prey", "...moongate", "... warm side the tower", etc.
Also, when I first got the album it was about this time of year, shortly before Christmas (which is when my brother and I bought 'Fragile'), so I think Christmas lights were an influence on me as well.

The lighting in this is so realistic.  There is a certain time of dusk, you can see it on snow and on the ocean, where everything turns a very unique shade of lavender/blue... it only lasts for a moment.

This is just beautiful.

Thank you! When I first started painting snow scenes in 1999 I favored blue snow at dusk but it never looked quite right. I noticed later on from photos that snow looks more lavender at dusk or dawn. It's been many years since I've actually seen snow. I miss it.

Nice Interpretation .. always loved that song .. actually pretty much anything from the "Yessongs Era" .. are you going to do Heart of the Sunrise?

Thanks. I already did "Heart of the Sunrise". It's in my gallery- well, two actually, one is a colored pencil drawing and the other is a painting, full title: "Heart of the Sunrise; Lost Dreamer".

Thank you. Originally, I was going to paint the colors in the trees in the same sort of stained glass effect as in my "Heart of the Sunset..." painting but I guess I didn't feel like painting the same effect twice and decided to go with a more naturalistic look.
I'm glad I did. It looks better this way.

I love this. The color choices are perfect, and the surrealistic effect of the trees turning to birds is really interesting. Despite the cold theme, there's a great deal of warmth to this painting. Beautiful work!

I like your semi-abstract organic landscapes and illustrations, by the way.

Yes. I really like your work and Roger Dean is definitely one of my influences, as well. He in turn seems to have been influenced by 19th century art like Art Nouveau and illustrators like Arthur Rackham.

You might want to check out some of my stuff; quite a bit of it is Yes/Roger Dean inspired.

Tolkyes In reply to itokashi [2011-02-22 14:44:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. My first "Siberian Khatru" interpretation was a colored pencil drawing that I did a long time ago. You can't see it here. I have a poor quality dig. photo of a 35mm photo of it that I was tempted to upload here but I'm not sure if want to.
The other is my painting, "Moongate Climbers" which you can see here.
Also, my painting, "Heart of the Sunset; Lost Father" is sort of a cross between "Siberian Khatru" and "Heart of the Sunrise".

Thanks. That's a fairly accurate analogy. It's intended to be somewhat childlike but a bit frightening or at least kind of eerie.

Tolkyes In reply to 8moon8black [2010-12-04 01:53:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I have been painting a lot of dark skies lately.
There's just something so evocative psychologically about a dark, moody painting as opposed to a more cheerful but less evocative sunny sky.
It's not just me, though- you may notice that most landscape paintings, either conventional or surreal, feature sunsets and dark or moody weather over sunny blue skies with white, puffy clouds.
Sunsets and stormy skies are more colorful, so therefore, are generally more interesting to paint.
Also, in life we like warm, sunny days but they don't really have much of a mood to them.
