If you will have a look at your 43 pic on facebook (america 2010) you'll see a similar effect on the stars, albeit less expressed. In this case the effect was caused by increasing the blacks while pushing highlights and contrast to make the stars appear brighter. The Tokina at 11mm is a bit soft while wide open too.

What annoyed me (and took me a while to realise) is that I zoomed in on my lens to make it easier to focus, once I had it right I zoomed out for a wider angle... the focus required zoomed in is different to that when its zoomed out so when the zoom changed the stars went out of focus again...
