Happy New Year. Great day today, a day that lends itself well to setting specific actions to improve this experience of life. I have quite a few items on my resolution list, the most pressing in my mind is the intention to be more present and learn to experience the individual moments that add up to a day, a week, a month and eventually a year.

This was one of the last images I took in 2014 and it seems to represent this concept of being present well. We were on the island of Kauai for a week in December, a trip we had planned about a year in advance. There was a large group of us all sharing one rental van (mini-vans are under-rated btw) so I knew I may only have a couple chances at photography. This was the only sunrise I had borrowed the van for. I drove to the end of a road I saw on my phone's GPS in the dark, not sure at all what I'd see when the sun rose over the horizon. I walked in the dark towards the unmistakable sound of the ocean meeting shoreline. Finally, in the dusk of morning, the peaks and coastline started to become visible.

For a land-locked year round resident of Utah, the scene was almost too good to be true, large rolling waves striking the rocky volcanic shoreline in the relentless rhythms of the ocean, an exotic landscape with knife ridge peaks covered in dense jungle. I looked out into the waters and saw a pod of dolphins cruising through the surf. At this point, some anxiety started to creep into my thoughts, mostly caused by the concern of missing the ideal image during this rare sunrise opportunity in the Pacific. I made up my mind instead to fully experience the individual moments of the sunrise and centered all my focus on the experience. I feel confident that I took away the best image I could have from the scene because of the conscious effort to experience the sunrise in the individual moments.

A long story short, I hope to carry over this concept into day to day life much more in 2015, and this is a direct example on how I feel spending time in nature and photography can improve the way one sees the world.
