Ooo...finally fulfilling those promises I made about scanning some school work...
This is the cover for a story book project for Figure Illustration I...pretty self-explanatory: We had to do three illustrations + a cover for our personal take on an existing story, as if for a children's book.
I chose Icarus, for three reasons:
-I am a huge steampunk geek, and the idea of Daedalus inventing all sorts of cool machinery was very appealing to me
-I've been on something of a Greek kick since 300; even my playing card designs done in gouache were Spartan hierarchy designs.
-...flying + greek + steampunk = fecking awesome.
...Did I mention greek + steampunk?
...Really?

TECHNOGREEK!
...Okay, I apologize, I'll stop now. Just know that I haven't abandoned this concept by any stretch of the imagination...I've actually been considering doing a graphic work of sorts that would be a retelling of the greek myths of Icarus, Theseus, and Perseus kinda all woven together...with technogreek elements, of course. XDDD

I've recently gotten into an obsession with the tale of Icarus, so this is just incredible! All I can think when I see this is the phrase "on frail wings of vanity and wax" (alesana fan sneaking out). I'm off topic, this is great and that's all there needs to be said. :]

This is amazing. @_@ Icarus has to be one of my favorite Greek mythology stories, I love the idea of it. I love the whole steampunk feel to this. Also, the gray tint to everything gives it a very gloomy feel, as if hinting at Icarus's impending doom. Love it! :'D I'm doing a project in art workshop where we're making an illuminated letter. I'm doing I for Icarus and giving it a steampunkish theme, but run down. Again, great job on this.

Well done, the combo of themes work really well together and the floating Labyrinth is real clear. I like it!
If this was a presentation page with the 'Icarus' title you could play with the type and maybe have a lone feather in the foreground under the 'RUS'?

Truthfully, the type was pretty half-assed...this was the last piece done at the tail end of the most painful all-nighter in my second year.
As for the feather idea, I briefly considered it but decided against it due to the wings in this version being completely mechanical (I know, not exactly realistic for the weight factor, but the overall aesthetic here is very much steampunk, so...XD)

I would as it happens, though at the moment there really isn't much. I'm not at home very often these days, so it has yet to be scanned.

Thanks!^^ Yeah...I'd hope so, for sure!^^ Inspired a tad at some illustrations I saw for the covers of the "FLIGHT" series of graphic novels, but mostly tried to communicate the vibe of the story. ^^
