The drop down doors on the Z1 are epic. I wished even a new Z4 could still have these futuristic hiding doors like the Z1.

Yes...that is a great old design that still looks gorgeous and stylish to this day.
And you did a really great job on it!

I've seen one of these personally, from a bus, only for a moment, because it was moving in the opposite direction. But I'm SURE it was the Z1, this design is not mistakable. It was one of the most exotic vehicles I've ever seen and believe me, I was really surprised I've seen it in my homeland.
On the web, I've seen two examples with black plates: www.zlomnik.pl/wp-content/uplo… images2.fotosik.pl/112/2e4e44d…

Not as exotic as the yellow Gallardo you saw at that STS Tuning show.

The 8-series comes somewhat close to this in looks. The late 80s through to the late 90s was the high point of BMW styling, in my humble opinion.

I still can't believe the Z1 and its technology dates back to 1986, when the most popular racing videogame "Outrun" came out.

This car, in my opinin, closely resembles the Ferrari Testarossa.

Von-Krupp In reply to toyonda [2013-05-15 19:07:17 +0000 UTC]

Possibly, though Ferrari's had two high points: during the 60s with the 250 GTO (that whole period, really) and then again in the mid-2000s with the F430.

The Testarossa is generally considered more iconic than pretty.

Personally, I like the F50. I like the flat, square cross-section and that contrasting black belt-line just sets the car off nicely. It's one of the few automobiles that tastefully executed the "melted plastic" look of the 1990s.

I personally think the F40 is the best Ferrari ever created.

Nice classic!
I've seen a couple of them around here, but they're worth around €25000,- here in Holland

There's one in a garage near my place, but it's dismantled. No idea why, it's been like that for 6 months.

Also, the handling wasn't very good, it would roll a lot in corners. Buffeting in the cabin was pretty bad as well above 40mph. Best for cruising really. And if you're a girl, you shouldn't wear short skirts or your panties will be shown when you climb in…

Pretty well demonstrated here: [link]

Everything you said is true. But like other supercars, the Z1 was for the STYLE and UNIQUENESS. And in order to experience that, comfort and reliability had to be sacrificed.

toyonda In reply to Rokovoj [2012-09-24 05:02:30 +0000 UTC]

Pretty much the best part of the whole car. They are so innovative.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Rokovoj In reply to toyonda [2012-09-24 05:25:07 +0000 UTC]

But the way the car was designed, you'd have to pretty much climb out of the car, right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

toyonda In reply to Rokovoj [2012-09-26 15:09:20 +0000 UTC]

yup, same like the Delorean, the SLS AMG and off road jeeps with high ground clearance.

Rokovoj In reply to toyonda [2012-10-05 21:50:24 +0000 UTC]

Well i guess the biggest advantage is that you won't have to worry about not having enough room opening the door or dinging the car next to you

I remember seeing this baby for the first time in a little book I bought from a newsman. I was 8. Back then, I didn't understand very well how the doors worked...but nowadays...

SHMEXY machine!

They really could bring this concept back...

BMW has indeed produced some of the greatest and most innovative designs for roadsters. But the Z1 was nothing like ever seen before. It was just technology and aesthetic beauty combined so well that there was just... nothing like it on this universe.

Now the Z3 which came out in 1995 and of course, the legendary 507 of the 50s and the 328 speedster of 1938 were also works of art. But they lacked one crucial element, and that, in my opinion, is the never-imagined-before technology.

I only got to see this sexy beast in photos And maybe I shouldn't say this but this car, and especially the innovative/technologically advanced electric door mechanism,,, well gave me the HARDEST ERECTION for a car maniac like me.

An erection so hard that it quite hurts a lot (and that's the truth ) similar to when I saw these 2 images

Very nice! Love the detail and the shading!

I think the 80s boxy design is slowly coming back in (tvs, phones, buildings etc). For example the new VW Golf has started to get boxier and it looks very modern.
