Here is a drawing of the Sign/Satan, the main antagonist from the 2002 science-fiction/thriller film dubbed "Signs", directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Mel Gibson. First of all, I would like to state that this movie is highly misunderstood, and on a certain level, it's actually designed to be. It was marketed as a film about an "alien invasion". It is in fact about a war between Heaven and Hell, as stated by director Shyamalan in his interviews. The characters' dead loved ones were angels, and the aliens were the demons, the main antagonist was the devil himself. There is much proof to support this, such as the weakness to blessed water, the aliens' beastly appearance, their methods of sneaking around, deceiving, and using terror, even the method of poisoning to "harvest souls". They have trouble getting through certain doors, because certain forms of faith are present in the household, reflecting upon the religious themes. This also explains the ultimate weakness of not tapwater, but in fact holy water, being blessed by the belief of the little girl character Bo, whose name means "to live". So the Nemesis Alien/Satan was not defeated by water, but indeed by the power of faith, showing that unrighteous evil cannot prevail. What I loved about the Signs as antagonists, is that they felt like such a realistic presence, along with everything else in the film. Shyamalan didn't make them completely stereotypical, he didn't make them have laser guns, or want to destroy the earth, he made them diabolical invaders who hide in the closets of your house, poison your kids when you're not looking, and drag them off to eat their souls. THAT my friends, is a real evil menace. They were what inspired me into liking both science fiction, and fantasy. I owe it all to the film Signs, and the hellish invaders of the same name.
