TRDL 2012 Series, No. 25 - Batman [Gotham by Gaslight]TRDL Cryptohistorical Redesign
This was done for the R3 Art Challenge, the subject being Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, the first Elseworlds DC story to be published.
The Outcast Studios 'Daily Sketch Challenge' featured this character awhile back, so I was inspired to take another pass at redesigning the Batman look for a Victorian era Batman story like Gotham by Gaslight, but with my design sensibilities. Tough to follow Mignola of course. Anyway, my concept is that he wears a harness that serves three functions: it's strapped to a climbing rope, allows him to hook his victims to it via rudimentary carabiners to hoist them up to the rooftops with him when using his compression-assist grappling hook device, and hides a primitive parachute behind him in case he pitches over the side of something tall. He's got a set of lenses that drop over his goggles to help him see in low-light or smokey conditions.

that is really neat. I've been trying to incorporate more brown into my Batman, more like a real bat, redesigns with no luck. You pulled it off perfectly.

You can add your batman, and of course anything you have that can go in previous weeks challenges, as they are always open. we pick new characters weekly from a pool of contributor suggestions.

I have to admit I don't know the original series this is taken from, but going from your other gothic steampunk reworks I would have expected something more elaborate in the goggles, and the mask just seems wrong somehow. Still, he has to be recognizable as batman, so I get it.

I like that his mask is held together by snaps...it's a way of showing how a fitted facemask could be used without elastic materials.
