Description 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 felt tip pens, A3 paper. Around 18 hours. It's all cross-hatching and it looks swell on my wall~

Based on a movie still from Oliver Twist (2005), which I have not seen, so don't spoil it. On the left is The Artful Dodger. I dunno who the other three are...

There's no such thing as "difficult". Some things just take longer than others This took a very long time! (five days)

If you want something to comment on:
- Why do you think I drew this?
- What do you think is the mood?
- Which part do you think took longest?

A real MASTERPIECE dashed in the scraps section! WHY?!! I'm amazed by the amount of work. The light and dark shades, so well mixed, and all this with traditional media... Why?!!

I knew exactly what this drawing was just by seeing the Dodger. It has a very photographic quality. Also, you captured the characters very well, and the contrast is amazing.

This is simply incredible, the cross-hatching is some of the best I have seen in a long time. Wonderful portrayal of static emotion too. Great work.

Sanluris [2008-04-09 05:25:44 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm....well now....I'm thinking the whole picture took quite a long time as you said. The most difficult part though...with crosshatching...looks to me like it'd be trying not to get the dark parts to cross into the parts that need to be light, like the areas on their faces and sleeves.
Crosshatching is making lines that cross each other and make up shapes, but can you use just a normal pencil to draw in things like their eyes, or is that crosshatching as well? I learned about crosshatching in art a few months ago, and I thought it looked difficult then, too. It looks pretty darn good too though

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

treijim In reply to Sanluris [2008-04-11 11:22:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks All the face details are either cross-hatched as much as I can get them. Even their lips, I think. btw, it's all pen, not pencil :]

YAAAAAY
comment time!

-Why:
I think you're drawing it because you're waiting for something to come to you, but you don't really know what is it, be it bad or good. It's really still up to the heavens. You show your emotion waiting for that thing you're waiting by the four faces that you portray in this picture and their surroundings. It's not really bright, but there's a hundred ways to show that in a picture with a felt tip pen. But you show it through many dark etchings to show textures. It's shows what you're feeling right now.

-What:
THEY'RE WATCHING CSI MIAMI.
haha lolz. no, just kidding.
I think the thing that they're waiting is almost here. They still don't know what is it, they've just been told that there's something coming for them...
although it's pretty weird concerning the girl in the bottom is looking at a different focus than the other...

-Which:
the back wall. so many textures....

If it was the original I'd be able to tell you who the others are. If I had to guess I'd say the other boy is Oliver.
If you want to see this movie, track down the original first!!!

Great piece though.
- Why you drew it?
Considering the technique you chose, possibly the challenge, it's a very 'busy' scene. By that I mean lots of texture, fabric, wood, hair. I imagine the still it's based on is also quite dimly lit which would be a further challenge.

treijim In reply to scraverX [2008-04-09 12:04:55 +0000 UTC]

I've seen the original The one on the right isn't Oliver. I know that much~

And yeah the challenge was a big part of it Thanks!

realistic
good mood
need more contrast between chars and bg
boy looks almost like a photo [more style than photo, tho]
girl in foreground needs more highlight
one of your best works
now my wrist is in crazy pain, so bye

treijim In reply to Kayelei [2008-04-09 12:04:28 +0000 UTC]

The girl was not supposed to stand out as much as the others, mainly because she has a lesser role in the movie. Thanks for your ideas, though.

I won't ask why your wrist is in pain, cos it would just hurt to explain it
