Description Coloured pencil, many hours over 3 days. It's about 28cm x 28cm big

Jesse Aarons from Bridge to Terabithia (played by Josh Hutcherson). I haven't seen it or read it so I wasn't sure what to call it. But dang, this was an enormous challenge for me!

See [link] for a photo of it on my wall, which... shows how much different (hopefully better) it is in person~
Please, no spoilers or saying the movie was bad!

The first thing I'm drawn to is his eye. The smooth blending and simple reflection points underneath the dark eyelashes hold my eyes for a moment. I really like the subtle highlight along the bottom eyelid; I think it really gives the eye life.

From there the shading running along the nose combined with the highlighting really is superb, it really defines his nose well. Also, the pinkish coloring used underneath the eye gives that nice warm feel to the light. I think that the strands of hair help keep the attention right around that region of the face as well.

Tough expression to capture with the lips. I've never seen the reference, but I can tell that it wasn't easy. I think something about the skin under the jaw before it connects to the neck makes him look a little chubby; it's kind of interesting.

Filling the negative space with smooth, out of focus coloring really makes an attractive background.

Very nice work; I really hate that I can't see this in person.

Woot I like how you describe where your eye travels. It's really informative, composition-wise. And as I just showed you my reference, I'm sure it makes more sense now I hate that I can't show people in person. Thanks!

Shinigami-no-Miko [2007-06-25 03:54:57 +0000 UTC]

Damn... is I think the first thing that came to mind when I saw this. I don't think I have ever seen any of your portrait studies before. You are simply just amazing at them. I am not too sure how to explain it but... with this you just seemed to capture this extra warmth and wonder in his face. When you look at this you look at it and think to yourself, "what could he be thinking? What is he contemplating?" it's just that intense, or at least I felt that when I saw it. I think what I like most is that you made this look realistic with out making it look like the photograph itself... Uh, if that made any sense at all... What I mean is, the texture from your colouring, really help adds to the mood in the picture, where as if it just looked like the picture and looked like a complete copy I don't think I would like it as much. It's stunning trejim, awesome work.

treijim In reply to Shinigami-no-Miko [2007-06-25 04:01:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much. Attempting a realistic without making it realism is something I often do. Having it look just like a photo is making the medium redundant, right? Someone else said the grainyness lets it down but I'm glad you like it. After all, the scanner tends to concentrate on the white between the pencil marks, whereas when we look at the real thing (if you were to see it in person) our eyes adjust and the grain becomes a 'blind spot' of sorts.

As for the emotional aspects, I do know that he is sitting beside a girl he likes, and he is trying not to smile or laugh. He also throws furtive glances towards her. Perhaps that gives you a clue as to why he's holding something back in this picture. He's also quite deep in thought, and you can probably see his internal dialog ticking away. Thanks for such an awesome interpretation

You're really very welcome. I find really, that much of your work just kinda... speaks to me. I am not sure where you get your inspiration from but so far from what I have seen your muse as warm and caring, and it refflects on your deviations for sure. I love seeing everything new you come out with.

treijim In reply to Shinigami-no-Miko [2007-06-25 04:14:43 +0000 UTC]

I don't believe is muses, sorry... That gives me too convenient an excuse for when I am not happy with my art or can't find any good ideas. I can only blame myself and my state of mind. My inspiration is my soul, my past, the lives of everyone on this earth, all the things that happen and what we call 'good' and what we call 'bad'. I love light and shadow and how they mix and grow cool and warm and strong and weak and light and small, and I love form and texture and mass and planes (of light). Much of my work is about growing up, overcoming hardships, childhood and its apparent innocence, and the transition from boyhood to manhood (as I'm a guy and thus can't directly to relate to becoming a woman).

Perhaps this is what you see?
