Before leaving to infiltrate Globex headquarters, the Changeling took a long, luxurious shower. Something about taking a shower before a mission seemed to calm her nerves. Still, tonight the shower wasn’t helping much. The prospect of being framed for two murders and the oddness of working with an android that was so human were keeping her on edge. As she stepped out of the bathroom, drying herself with a towel, she thought again about Cynthis, and some emotions she couldn’t quite recognize pulsed through her. Then, there was a knock on her bedroom door.

“Come in,” Cynthia responded automatically. The door opened, and Cynthis stood there, in her bluish circuitry skin, clearly mechanical. Surprised, Cynthia instinctively tried to cover herself, and then summoned her uniform to cover herself. Apologetically, she mumbled, “I thought you were my mother.”

“No apologies needed, Cynthia,” Cynthis responded with a small chuckle. "I do know you’re inter-sexed, and I actually find it fascinating.”

Cynthia raised her right eyebrow. “Well that’s a first, I think. Have you been programmed to find me fascinating?”

“No, it’s not specific programming. But a priority for my artificial intelligence is to learn about human beings and culture. You see, Paulina thought you should have more than just an assistant.”

Cynthia spoke slowly, “What does that mean?”

“I have been configured to support you in many ways, including socially. Your mother has confided many times to Paulina that she worries that you are isolated. You don’t get out to parties, you rarely socialize with others and you have not developed an erotic attachment.”

“Hey, that’s personal!”

Cynthis replied in an earnest voice, “I don’t mean to embarrass you; my function is to help you and your mother, as well as fight for the truth about Professor Crowne’s death. But I am much more than that, and you should not see me as a tool but rather as a friend. In any case,” she changed the subject, “I can do no more for you staying here tonight, and I should assist you in retrieving the videos.”

“No. It’s too dangerous, and you aren’t trained to work with me.”

“It’s dangerous for you. They don’t know about me, but they are looking for you. Your mother is worried you can get hurt.”

“If you haven’t noticed, I do have powers.”

“You still have limitations, especially in human form. You aren’t bulletproof then.”

“At least I have skin. You are obviously an android.”

Cynthis said nothing, but in a flash her bluish covering changed into a replica of human skin. Cynthia blinked in amazement and reached out to touch her right arm, running her hand upwards towards Cynthis’ shoulder. “It feels so real,” she whispered.

“It imitates the human epidermis quite effectively,” Cynthis replied.

Without thinking, Cynthia continued to run her hands over Cynthis, and then impulsively hugged her companion. Cynthis smoothly returned the gesture, and they stood in a close embrace.

Just then, Cheryl reached the door and saw them both locked together. Astonished, she lost control and changed into vapor. The dinner tray she had brought for Cynthia with a sandwich plate and two cups of coffee clattered to the floor.
