Description Inside the lab’s reception area, Henry Tanner of Tanner Pharmaceuticals and Lawrence Dodd of Triton/Grull Aerospace were already waiting. After some small talk, they agreed that all three were concerned about Dr. Sorenson’s undocumented expenditure of over $480 million over the last three years.

A moment later, the tall and curvaceous Annika Sorenson walked in. Her dress was more casual then her usual prim business suit, and she greeted them with an unexpected warm smile.

“I’m glad you all came. I understand the board’s concern, especially after Jeffrey was accused of improper secret projects. I’m sure though, that after this tour you will be satisfied that this is legitimate and deserving of additional funding.”

Cheryl’s reaction was cool. “That remains to be seen, Annika. Even if the $480 million has been spent wisely, we still have the question of hiding it from the board.”

“We spent more than that on the R & D for the Shadow fighter,” countered Mr. Dodd. “I’m hoping Miss Sorenson has spent the money at least as wisely.”

“If you’ll follow me, I will show you,” she urged, and led them down corridors to a bright, sunlit lab. “Four years ago GLOBEX revolutionized the medical field when we produced the synthetic T-cell. As you know, this advance promises cures for leukemia, several forms of cancer, as well as MS.”

“I am quite aware of that”, answered Cheryl tartly. “I’ve been pushing for increases for that medical research. The work you have done in the last three years is outstanding.”

“I must agree,” Henry Tanner chimed in. “My daughter Brenda has a new femur bone thanks to Dr. Sorenson. A fully natural version, that actually grows like the real one, thanks to those stem cells.”

Annika ushered them from the lab into an elevator, where she pushed the button for an underground level. As the doors shut, Lawrence Dodd still had doubts. “Mind you, considering all these miracles, where exactly has the money gone? Even giving you the benefit of the doubt, Doctor, the money you’ve accounted for still leaves out that $480 million.”

“Three years ago, Jeffrey McGuire approached me with an idea. Cloning actual organs like the heart, lungs, even the brain, over a short time period so they could be used for emergency surgery.”

“Is that possible?” asked Tanner.

“Actually, we’re within a few weeks of opening a replacement organ bank.”

Cheryl was flabbergasted. “But what is involved in this procedure? Are you cloning actual humans, and selling their parts?”

Annika chuckled as the Elevator reached the secret lab level and the doors opened. “Nothing that macabre, Mrs. Crowne, I assure you. We actually grow the organs separately, just like we do the bones.”

They stepped out into a large room with many rows of growing tanks lined up throughout the chamber. The trio was silent with astonishment as they inspected the facility. As they peered in the window of one row of tanks they saw cryogenically preserved internal organs.

Annika then turned to them in the center of the room. “This is our most recent achievement. There are 64 tanks, all containing various organs that are available for medical purposes.”

“Have they been tested? Dodd wondered.

“Only phase one, in vitro testing. With more funding, we can ask the University Hospital could assist us in phase two, human testing.”

“What’s that ‘in veetro’ you said?” Dodd growled.

“That’s in a test tube, Lawrence.”

Tanner, who as a pharmaceutical executive needed no explanations, was focused on the opportunity. “When can you start, Doctor?”

“As soon as you approve my budget, we’ll begin developing test protocols,” she replied.

Cheryl, who had been gazing at the machinery and tanks, now turned to Annika. “You still haven’t explained where all the money went, Dr. Sorenson. These tanks were state of the art 10 years ago. Surely this obsolete equipment is not where that $480 million went?”

“Of course not Mrs. Crowne,” she replied. “We are just starting the tour. Come with me to this elevator go down to the next level, where all your questions will be answered. Maya here will escort you.” Dr. Sorenson’s assistant, a willowy brunette in a full white lab coat, ushered the three board members into the elevator. “ I will follow shortly,” explained Sorenson.

Maya selected the appropriate button, and , as the doors closed, she jumped out. “I forgot my tabl--,“ she apologized, the ending being cut off by the closing doors.

“She seems sincere,” Tanner commented.

“Something stinks,” Cheryl replied. “Why have Jeffrey and Annika never told us of this until now?”. Cheryl started to feel flushed, and turned towards the wall of the elevator, fearing that she was about to experience another uncontrollable phasing.

“I agree”, said Lawrence as he loosened his collar. “This is too big to keep under wraps, even for Jeffrey. Is it getting warm in here?”

Soon Henry started coughing, followed by Cheryl and Lawrence. Cheryl pressed the emergency button to no avail, while Henry slumped to the floor, coughing.

“We’re being gassed,” she rasped, coughing uncontrollably. Soon Lawrence crumpled, unconscious, as Cheryl body phased uncontrollably. Moments later she also slumped, falling to the floor of the elevator unconscious.
