If you're in a hurry, wait until you have at least 20 minutes to spare before turning in a lost item.Man, it was SO IMPORTANT to the policeman that I get them my address so that the people picking up the wallet could thank me.
I went back at about 9:30 at night, after I got back from work (it's a 24 hour place) and filled it out then. They knew exactly who I was and then asked me all sorts of questions about me. It was cute ^_^

Ooh, I turned in a lost cellphone once- same deal! Luckily I wasn't in a hurry so I had time to fill out the paperwork. Was not expecting to have to write down all my own info like that though(^w^);;
