Some people just don't like sitting next to strangers.

And yet, when sharing a train with others, sometimes you gotta be polite and share your space ^_^

And sometimes you gotta respect others' personal space.

I mean, I wasn't planning to sit on them. Sitting next to people is just how public transportation works, and on a nearly full train, it's respectful to make sure everyone has a seat who needs one. Respect goes both ways.

I do this in the USA because I live in a metropolis and people are very invasive of space.

so being a seat hog on the subway is universal apparently. No worries you don't have to ask her to move it just "accidentally" trip and knock it off the seat and then when you hand it back to her say "oh mind if I sit here? Everywhere is is full"

Ah, mostly on the regular trains it's dudes who need to take up 2 seats or need to spread their legs SUPER wide b/c they just cannot be contained, but the Shinkansen is like the airplane, so there's no blurring the line there, plus there's plenty of area at your feet and above the seats to store stuff, so it's always seemed more ridiculous on the Shink ^_^;;

I would've confronted her about it.

I'm sure some people could, but it's across language barriers and I have a really hard time with confrontation ^_^;;

Argh it bugs me when people do that here too. It's like. This is a public wossname deal with people sitting next to you, they paid too.

I'm average height but yeah, she's taller than me ^_^
Yeah, it happens all over, I'm just surprised people who are used to public transportation do it quite so much >_< Especially when it's crowded

I'm not going to lie, I did that for several minutes while I was on a plane last. Although I was mostly trying to get that damn seatbelt they had there on me, and only put the bag there so I could do it without it getting in the way. didn't realize that people couldn't sit down until I realized that I was getting ugly looks.

Yeah, but Japan is pretty considerate in so many ways, it's surprising to see stuff like this on public transportation ^_^;;
