Description Micron pen with watercolor and white pen, on rough paper, 2.5"x3.5".

After a recent drawing that took several weeks to finish in a realistic style, I've decided to take a break and try some work that's more expressionistic in style. It will be a nice change to do some mini-paintings that take no more than a couple of hours from start to finish.

This little watercolor is based on the work of Γ‰lisabeth VigΓ©e Le Brun. If her self-portraits can be taken at face value, she worked on her oil paintings while dressed to the nines, with hat, flowers, ostrich feathers, and all. Accident-prone as I am while painting, I can hardly imagine trying it. There's a story that she was all dressed up to go to the French court one day, when she sat down to study one of her WIPs. On rising, she discovered that she had sat on her paint palette and ruined her best dress. That, I can imagine doing.

I really enjoyed painting this spontaneous little doodle, without stressing over realistic anatomy or correcting my mistakes. It's a very fresh and joyful way of working.

She must have been a very confident young lady to paint in such fancy clothes! I hope she didn't spill any paint on herself!

Very nice little portrait! You are so good with watercolor!

Indeed she must have been confidant! Or perhaps she was taking artistic license--I really don't know for sure.

Thanks for the compliments!

That's so cute! I had never heard of Madame Le Brun before, so I looked her up. She seems like an interesting historical figure, having painted for Marie Antoinette and all. Β

Thanks! Aside from painting hundreds of portraits and landscapes, many with great historical significance, she wrote an autobiography which is probably a fascinating read. I hope to track down a copy sooner or later.

Yeah, I saw that she caused a bit of a commotion simply for painting herself with a toothy smile. Can you imagine?

Never heard of the artist, so I looked her up. This must have been based on her, "Self-portrait in a Straw Hat".Β

I love the stylization you've done with your Elisabeth here! She's so cute! I like the idea of her holding the brushes, too. Each brush tip, color coordinates with the flowers and leaves on her hat. Nice!

I hope to see more such stylized works in the future! Β

"Each brush tip, color coordinates with the flowers and leaves on her hat."

Yes, a hat like that deserves a portrait all its own, don't you think? Β

Thanks so much--you always have such kind comments about my work!

You're correct about the reference painting. I thought the real Elisabeth looked quite cute in that one, so I'm glad you found my little painting cute as well.

You're welcome. I enjoy interacting with the artists, models, and stockers here on DeviantArt. Much benevolence, good will, kindness, and understanding flows abundantly here. It's nice to be able to go with the flow here, where I don't feel like I'm swimming against the current, as I do elsewhere.

You don't know how refreshing it is to read that! Elsewhere on the web, it can be nearly impossible to interact civilly with people who hold opposing worldviews. You & I differ on the topic of religion (and perhaps on other topics, as well), but here on dA we can be supportive and appreciate what the other has to offer as an artist. That sort of mutual respect is elusive at best on most Internet forums.

I used to post on forums till I was red in the face, and would of till I was blue in the face, but I walked away from the forums and out of the chat rooms, to get some fresh air instead.
