“What's that?” A chubby young Sandshrew asked, poking the contents of a small pink bundle.

“Your little sister,” his mother answered, gently placing the sleeping baby shrew in the cradle in front of them. The baby hiccuped and stirred as she nestled into her bed. The mother Sandshrew gently stroked her cheek to help her settle. Within seconds the baby was completely relaxed and breathing deeply in her sleep.

“Be good to her, Marty. Your Mammy was lucky to have another. The doc doubted we'd even have one kiddo, let alone two!” said his father, a Sandslash who towered over all of them. He rested a claw on his son's shoulder. Marty didn't understand what his father meant. Confused, he leaned over the cradle to get a better look at the tiny baby.

“Does doc know the Delibird? Did he tell him that mammy couldn't have a baby?” He asked, looking curiously at his new sister. She was tiny and fragile looking, like a flower trying to bloom while there was still snow on the ground.

“Er... yes, son. That's what the Delibird said,” his father answered, scratching his chin and glancing over at his wife. She smiled and covered her mouth to stifle a giggle. He removed his claw from his son's shoulder and wrapped one arm around his wife, leaning in for a peck on the cheek. Marty payed them no mind. He was too focused on the baby. A little sister. He had a little sister.

“What's her name?” He asked without looking up.

“Dora,” said his mother in a warm and loving voice.

“Dora...” Marty echoed. Gingerly, he reached out with a fat claw and rested it on the baby's brow. She didn't move, but her cheeks seemed to glow pink for a moment at his touch. He smiled. He liked her already.
