Description Made for 's Four Elements contest - [link]

I know, silly name, but i couldn't resist.
At least my main entry isn't fire, which is my own element...i went with something different. The element of water makes for a flowy dance...UNDERWATER PARTY!

Watercolor, white gouache, colored pencil

Been a fascination of mine since childhood. Neighbor had a pet goose & I thought its webbed feet looked cool. Watched "Man From Atlantis" as a kid, too, where the main character had webbed hands. Guess it's the primordial amphibian in me!!

I love this work.
I love the dynamics, face expression, the splashy feeling, the background.

The colours of the girl, seem to me a bit "eaten" by the scanner, am I right?

Thank you! It's all about the splashy feeling!

merpagigglesnort In reply to TrollGirl [2011-09-01 00:46:59 +0000 UTC]

well, they definitely do have similarities, especially that they are all things that i'm really into! when i first joined dA i wanted to get really involved because i'm bipolar and i can't work. i'm home alone all day and i wanted to feel like i was doing something useful. so i either worked my way into being co-founder for several that impressed me and i founded a couple to focus on things i was interested in that didn't seem to exist yet.

there are quite a few of the same people in more than one of the groups, probably mostly because i invited them, since i was impressed by their work and i thought they would like to know other people i knew were interested in the same sorts of things.

the collaborations group was a nifty idea that and i came up with and a lot of people seem to think it's fun. i think it's an opportunity to work with other artists that doesn't really exist in "real life." i always felt that my collaborations with were some of the very best work i did, so i thought it might help others do the same.

spirals and swirls is a little different because i accept pretty much any medium that fits the theme of the group. it's very focused on a particular style of art.

i was invited to be co-founder of deviated-path by an artist that i was pretty much in awe of, and am now good friends with, . to be honest, i think it's the most high quality traditional group i've seen. it has high standards and we've gathered a lot of artists that we think are excellent artists. it's also a little different because we accept minimalism and sculpture. i just added a sculpture folder in the spirals and swirls group, because it's been a bit of a project for me, to promote sculpture on dA, because i think it's an under appreciated art form here.

i was "hired" to run contests on the psychedelia-club, but i've gotten more involved with that. we take any medium, as well, and obviously it has a specific theme. it's an all skill level group that accepts most work.

the shapists was the first group i was an admin in. i noticed the group when i first got on dA and i thought, omg! that's the perfect title/style that describes what i do! i was determined to get involved in that one. i just changed it to traditional only, because that fits the group's original focus. if you look at it, the style is pretty specific to it. i've found that many people see it and feel just the way i did--wow! this is the name for what i do! the majority of the work in it are drawings.

abstract-painting accepts both traditional and digital painting, unlike deviated-path. it includes more people (and of course, different people and only accepts paintings, whereas deviated path accepts any traditional medium.

i was invited to be co-founder of the freek show by a good friend and that one is totally different from the others--just really weird unusual stuff. a lot of it is dark, but there are also a lot of just bizarre work in it.

so, there are similarities, definitely, but each one covers different sorts of things. so each group has a majority of members that are not in the others. but i would say that they are similar, but by no means exactly the same. also, they all sort of wax and wane a bit, seems pretty random, taking on different agendas. i run totally different contests in each one, so that makes things very different, for awhile at least.

i know this is way more of an answer than you wanted, but it's important to me, and feel that each one covers different aspects of art and has a lot of members that aren't in the other groups. sorry for the loooooong reply!
