I liked the bittersweet ending of the original FMA series so much, but the movie almost ruined it for me. Then Brotherhood came out....

The movie...made me happy because my no.1 goat was for Al to be human again, and the brothers to be together. Ed kinda liked his automail by the end so all was good. EXCEPT. POOR FUGGING WINRY. WTF IS SHE GONNA DO NOW. That was like the no. 1 thing I hated about the movie.
Brotherhood gets better the further you get into it, because we all know they rushed through what the fans already knew from the first series. I like how Al gets more time to be a badass fighter, and is actually BETTER at it than Ed (in the first series, it was all about Ed)

The only thing the movie really did was make sure the brothers were together again at the end. Winry was still left waiting until Ed needed her, Al was still a child, and the whole movie got caught up in the Nazi thing with barely touching on the whole souls from the other side being used thing and its sinister implications.
Though the 2003 series seemed to have a better sense of theme and symbolism. Not everything was spelled out and the chemical part of alchemy was part of the plot/fights instead of it being just 'magic with rules'. The Homonculi and their plot threads all were set up early to have a specific purpose at the end that wasn't obvious....so Al mostly fell into the background with little development beyond having a person literally die inside him!
Al actually had more time to grow on audiences, but some of he still felt like Edward's support rather than him trying to do anything for himself in the first third. The last episode does more freakin' character development in 20 minutes than the the past 20 episodes for Al. Ed had a gradual development, Al's always felt sputtered.
Oh, and also Winry wasn't nearly as shafted. She actually did stuff other than get tied up and repair automail.

We can only hope Ed finds the mirror to Winry in the other world, huh? It still sucks for her though, she's spent years helping the brothers and now she'll never see them again. ;0;
The first series definitely is simpler in execution, but as a result it's easier to understand and follow. The new one has SOO many subplot for almost every character, ulterior motives and all that. It's insane!
Omg I literally cried for Al when Marta died inside him...that's frigging horrible...he's like 14 years old ugh. I'll still never get over Nina though, that shit scared me for LIFE. D8

The ulterior motives and political drama was good, but it still ended up in just a big shonen fight scene that fixed everything when Ed punched god-father guy.
And I think Al was still about 10 at the time, not 14. He had his body on the other side that matured, not necessarily his mind. Would explain why his voice never changed through the years and he was super wussy. In the first series didn't his body come back as a 10 year olds anyways?
So a grown women, was impaled and killed inside of a 10 year old. A woman he got to know, feel sorry for, he was trying to help, and the State that his brother serves literally killed her with a sword inside of him letting her corpse stay in his hollow body and the blood drip from him. AND HE CAN'T EVEN FEEL IT. He has no blood, he felt no pain from the sword digging around, he probably couldn't even feel the warmth leave her form as she become as cold as the steel he was made of. His childish actions from before like hiding a cat inside himself while the same thing only served to trap her inside of him like a fish in a barrel....he knows she can't be revived. He tried that with his mother. Why was he spared? Twice now? He can't die. The Homonculi envied that. The State used that. Is this a torment by God to spite him for his childish desire to bring his mother back? Or was it his brother's doing from involving them with this? All he knows is that he is soaked in her blood and he can't even feel it rolling down his torso like she wasn't even real. She just stopped rolling around. A dead woman...inside a child who probably still thought girls had cuties.
