All of you who have played Metroid know what this is. I think it is my favorite environment design in the first game.I'd say it is a odd thing to make a fan art of. Anyway, enjoy.

that aslo reminds me! when i first went to norfair on the classic NES metroid! i thought those little fire things (known as novas) were the metroids Xp

The area of Norfair and Ridleys Hideout in the original game is just like Hell. I die there the most everytime I play the game.

No. I didn't get it at first. And it's not the most memorable boss in the series.

I may not play Metroid (I ought to try it some day), but I do find this to be quite interesting.
Your use of color does give some sort of transparency effect of the green goo (is that what it's supposed to be?) on the black eyeball (?). I also dig the shine you added on them (gotta love the shines! : D).
Is this a fiery or sunset-like environment by any chance? The orange at the bottom seems to hint so. (unless it is part of their design).

The environment is a part of the area Norfair in the game. It's a fiery and lava filled area, and parts of it is filled with these green transparent bubbles.
So the orange bottom is the reflection of the lava filling the lover parts of the area. So you where not so wrong about what you saw.
