Lol, Toch isn't always unhappy. XD But he was happier when he was younger, before his parents had another kid and he started fighting with his dad all the time. He has domestic family problems and grows up into a very apathetic teen. :I

Turtle-Arts In reply to hawkeyemaverick [2013-10-25 05:49:25 +0000 UTC]
Yup. Each of the kids in Sky Herder comes from a different sort of family background. I thought it would be nicer to vary them a bit from typical "kid's film" families. XD

Turtle-Arts In reply to hawkeyemaverick [2013-10-25 07:06:11 +0000 UTC]
Well, like Toch comes from a family with an (in some senses) abusive parent. He's the kind of kid that avoids being in his home whenever possible because it's a bad environment for him.
Nezah comes from a family that, while not abusive, is generally disapproving of her life choices.Β Her parents are good about trying to support her, but there's always a bit of disappointment towards her that they can't get over.
And Mier actually comes from a perfectly normal, functional family. Which makes his home kind of a haven for the other two.
Also, all three of them have both of their parents. None of that "dead-parent-disney-syndrome" stuff. XD Nezah and Mier don't have any siblings, and Toch has an infant brother, but he hardly has any attachment to him. Mier is much more of a brother to him than his actual sibling.

Well, I figured I'd try to reflect some realistic types of families that children might grow up in real life.Β And personally I think relying too much on the "dead parent" thing is kind of a cop out. Like, it's an easy way to put in "drama" or "sympathy" for a character, without actually having to build up actual history. You can just say "Oh, her life is hard because her parent died" and then never say anything else because it was too much work to actually come up with a story. At least, that's how I feel Disney does it most of the time. I mean, having one or no parents can be great for story if done right, but I feel like a lot of people use it as a patch instead actually writing something interesting. I think it's actually harder to write a character whose parents are both still living. Or at least, it's a generally avoided type of character it seems. But now I'm ranting, and I could talk about this forever, so I'll stop. XD
But that being said, the families aren't actually very relevant in Sky Herder. Like, you don't see them much, since the story is about the kids. There's enough other heavy crud in the story that the family issues are more hinted and implied rather than openly addressed.Β But the family environments contribute to each kid's personality traits and desires, so it was important for me to figure out how each of them grew up.

Fair enough XD
And I don't mind the rant XD I like reading other people's opinions about things. Although I do agree with you that "dead parents" can be used as a cop out. On the other hand, having both parents be alive can be a cop out into the extreme of "my character has had the perfect life." In the end, I think there's got to be a balance of familial interactions (whether with a single parent or both parents) and how it builds in the character's life story.
Fair enough. XDΒ
It's good that you're going in that much depth though because it keeps the character more relatable and real, even if their parents aren't involved in the current story arc. Ironically, now that I think about it, we're talking about the single parent or Batman's parents scenarios when (at least in my experience), I see a lack of thinking about the family or even how childhood experience affects the character's current actions and personality. People don't seem to go in that deep these days.Β

I like to dig that deep. :> World building/character building is just about my favorite thing. I love creating history, and mythology, and cultures, and languages, and social norms/irregularities for my various stories. And I like creating in depth character histories because it allows for me to know how that characters acts, and how they would act in different situations.Β For example, for SKy Herder, I created a ton of info about the world and culture. Like, I designed a cultural history, written language, religion (with various gods), burial methods/afterlife beliefs, holidays, agriculture/ irrigation methods... all kinds of junk. Because it all contributes to what the environments look like, and it helps them all feel like they're part of the same world.Β Plus, it's just so dang fun. XD

It makes them way more real. And way more interesting
I know what you mean. After I took my characters out of the fan base, I ended up designing an entire interconnected galaxy system between two planets, and then for both of them: world system, government, factions, cultural interactions, tribal structures, flora/fauna, solar and lunar calendars, cultural history, scientific explanations on how elemental powers work, as you said...tons of junk.
It really is way too much fun XD
I'm amazed you did a written language though (I don't have the patience to figure out something good ) What did you base your written language on? Β

Turtle-Arts In reply to hawkeyemaverick [2013-10-25 08:08:29 +0000 UTC]
Yeah it's super fun. Definitely the most relaxing part of the work for me. XD
And I don't know if it's really based on any particular language. I just wanted to do something that had a semi-glyphic sort of feel. I guess it was a little inspired by the line and dot numbering system that Maya used, but it's not for numbers. XD
But here's a piece I posted that has some of the writing on it- turtle-arts.deviantart.com/artβ¦

Thanks! ^^ And yeah, it corresponds generally to English letters. Though there are a few extra symbols for some extra letters. Kind of like a Spanish alphabet more than an American one. Like, there's a different glyph for "ch" when it's pronounced like in Toch's name. Hence his name is written with only three glyphs instead of four. And there are certain glyphs to denote time, place, and person.Β They don't really have punctuation though. The only one they have is basically akin to a period and only goes at the end of a complete section.Β So it's more of a divider between portions of different topics than for use at the end of a single though. But it's like a lot of ancient cultures where not all of the population is actually literate, and most of the writing is stone carving that pertains to religious things, or accounts of history.

hawkeyemaverick In reply to Turtle-Arts [2013-10-25 19:18:03 +0000 UTC]
Gotcha. ^^
It would make sense to do glyphs for something like "ch," especially if it's used a lot with naming individuals in the Sky Herder world, then there wouldn't be so much work involved writing out names and such.Β

I'm starting to think I need to get back into trying to build a writing system XD
Would the number system have it's own separate glyphs or would it still follow the same pattern? Or is it actual number system as in seasons?

Turtle-Arts In reply to hawkeyemaverick [2013-10-26 14:37:28 +0000 UTC]

Maybe have something beyond a line and dot system...like square spirals XD Maybe somehow the number of lines in the spiral correspond with a certain coefficient XD

Turtle-Arts In reply to hawkeyemaverick [2013-10-27 01:16:20 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it's gonna have to be something different. But I don't want to get too complex looking or it won't fit with the letters. I dunno I'll just need to sit and think it out some time.

hawkeyemaverick In reply to Turtle-Arts [2013-10-28 18:33:41 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I can imagine if it was something like spirals, getting up to a thousand spiral lines might be a bit awkward
Aw well, I'm sure you'll figure out something that'll work out well for the Sky Herder world XD
