I made alot of friends with mids while I was there and to see them graduate and throw their hats up like that was just awe inspiring. You dont even have to be a grad to feel that energy rush. Nothing like it.

No they don't. They have new hats to put on after that.
What's fun is running around collecting all those hats and getting the ones with money in them

Those are the hats they wore as Midshipmen. After graduating, they're no longer Midshipmen, but officers. Therefore, they wear different hats and no longer need the ones they just threw.
Many of them tape money to the inside of the hats, knowing that people rush that field to collect those 1,000+ hats. Alot of people keep them as mementos of being at a naval academy graduation.
I personally have been to two graduations, and have collected 3 hats.
Just a funny tradition.

It certainly makes sense now (hehe, well explains more than just how one does not need to look for their hat at the end of the '1000 and more people's hat throwing'
