Description Regulus galago -The Supurb Galago Griffon

The Supurb Galago griffon is among the smallest griffons described and its status is not well known. They are insectivors and live in the Eastern Arch Forrest of Africa. Males are territorial defending their terrirotires from rivals using varrying series of loud calls. Each male controls a 'harem' of up to half a dozen females.

I can be very specific about what sort of bird was used. It was a male Supurb Fairy Wren Malurus cyaneus. That's easy. However I can't be very specific about what sort of Galago/busbaby it is. For those who don't know the Galagidae are an African family of primates which are very cryptic. They are notoriously dificult to ID based on pelage (there are two species which even my lecturer can't tell apart based on their coat pattern they're so identical). A lot of the species have been described based on vocalisations (the loud territorial calls mentioned above). Going by the size of the gryphon it is probably either the genus Galagoides or Galago. They are the smallest two of the 5 Galagidae genera and the size is about right. From the species of these genera it's most likely to be Galago rondoensis as I know it curls its tail up around it's body (but the tail isn't as long or as thickly furred). I did my major essay on the Galagidae.

Only my second water colour picture and the first one using any sort of wash which I'm very glad I didn't stuff up (I haven't had huge success with washes in the past). I'm very pleased with the fur, I think it could pass for the real thing (yes I do think that Galagos look rather moth eaten. This might have something to do with some of the photos being of stuffed specimens).

Oh any Galagidae griffon is a wonderful thing! I love it! You did indeed a very good job on the fur! The depth and thickness is so luscious. I especially love the details on the perch for some reason. The colors are lovely overall and the pose is perfect for this creature.

The thickness of the fur comes from many layers of water colour. I like the lichen on the perch too.

I'm glad you think the pose is good for the little guy. I always try to get a pose that suits gist of at least one of the animals.

That's really cute, and a bit funny! :--)
First I thought that it could look better with more detailed background, but actually 'cause it's so simple it makes the griffon look even better and I like this style. : )

I knew that if I did an overly detailed background I ran the risk of making it over power the griffon. Simple does work well with the cute griffon.

Really beautiful work! The detail of the griffon is really impressive and looks wonderful against the soft washes in the background.

I couldn't have a clustered background- it would just detract from all the work put into the griffon.

Most impressive I should say it's much cooler looking in than your digital colours... what sort of paper did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Typthis In reply to MeMyMine [2009-07-25 21:06:24 +0000 UTC]

Paper was 10x14 inch Cotman cold pressed watercolour paper.

Yeah I know, my traditional stuff's generally better than my digital stuff. It's also more rewarding. But digital is just so much more convenient.
