Description one of my friends asked me how to do some basic texturing, so i wrote up a simple step-by-step tut. I just want to see what people think of this.

is it easy to follow?, have i missed something out?

please tell and i'll modify this

thank all

yes, nice tut, but you don't really need that plug in, you can always render your uv map, at least in max 2010 you can... I'm not sure about earlier versions... what other plugins or scripts would you recommend

aah, i've tried 2010 on trial, but it just kept crashing, so i've stuck with 2008. so far i've not found a way to render the uv map. although 2010 has better uv mapping facilities, from viewing tuts.

the only other plug-in i've used is greeble which is really fun and useful. there are several sites out there that offer tonnes of free plug-ins for all versions of max and other progs. the only thing i can reccomend is to browse them, see which ones sound interresting, and try them out

nice tutorial, covered a lot without breaking the brain xD

If you were to add to this it may be worth mentioning the 'checker' pattern as a texture for unwrapping the slghtly more complex models to avoid distortion etc xD

Oh and as this has been burned into my memory from a lecturer I just have to spread it! ''Never render on Black'' lol xD

ulyses In reply to CrispinTwig [2009-12-13 13:01:30 +0000 UTC]

thank you. yea, i only recently learned about unwrapping organic models, where the checker pattern is very useful to see where the textures are stretched or squashed.
there are video tuts on youtube about texturing, which trump my pic-tuts, so i don't think i'll be doing any more, but i can certainly provide links to the ones on youtube
and your right lol, should have done it on a lighter background

ulyses In reply to Heraldlaze [2007-08-04 12:51:37 +0000 UTC]

rendering is quite simple, most of my stuff in my gallery is done with whats called 'scanline rendering'. all it is, is you have to add a 'skylight' to your scene, doesnt matter where, just as long as its there. then in the rendering options you need to go to the 'advanced lighting' tab, and select 'light tracer' plug-in. this is assuming your using 3d max (any version).

once that is all done, just click on render

oh dont forget to add a plane or a box underneath whatever your rendering. thats the basics

if your texturing your model and you want special effects like 'bump' and 'specular' maps to work, you also need to add either an omni or target spotlights to your scene.

hope that helps you

Most tuts I've looked at for texturing, never mentioned that you can select in the viewport and it shows up in the Edit UVW's. Thanks for the tip.

Well it certainly looks fantastic mate, and really informative and beginner-friendly. I'll have to test it out some time for you... now all i need is Max

Do one for Maya or C4D

ya, you need to get a hold of max

and i need to get a hold of maya

DXBigD In reply to The-Vanguard [2007-07-22 03:34:00 +0000 UTC]

This works for any 3D application. He used a plugin to render the UV map with each separate part a different color, but you can just save the UVs as an image when you have the editor open. Most apps have a way of exporting the UVs to a file - and if they don't, just take a screenshot!

Apart from that, all apps have the same basic point move and weld/cut/unweld tools. The only differences should be in the "Relax" tools, which really help with more organic models and save you tons of time. Personally I've mapped objects in old and new versions of Truespace, Gamespace, Lightwave and Max, so if you learn how to do it in one, you'll know how to do it in any other application. Just make sure you use a checker texture on your model to easily spot distorted areas! (you'll need this when mapping things more complex than flat surfaces)

Anyway, nice tutorial, ulyses.

The-Vanguard In reply to DXBigD [2007-07-22 12:17:22 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, that's interesting, i'll keep that checkered texture in mind.

But yeah, i know that it's similar in most programs, i've tried out a few, but this tut would be hard to effectively test-drive in any other program other than Max, and seeing as it's been years since i've used it i'm the perfect 'beginner' candidate!

Thanks a lot for all the info though dude, most appreciated, very kind of you

ulyses In reply to DXBigD [2007-07-22 09:05:51 +0000 UTC]

thanks very much DXBigD

i've tried to screenshot the UV maps before, but the final map isnt as high in quality as with this plug-in.
The relax tool seems like it could be very usefull on max, i'll see if i can find it, maybe i've missed it

DXBigD In reply to ulyses [2007-07-22 20:31:07 +0000 UTC]

It mostly got better with Max 8 and 9. They have the pelt mapping now which is similar to what other stand-alone UV mapping apps had. It's not as good as in DeepUV or Unfold3D, but it still helps. Oh and the default way of exporting the UVs in Max is to click "Render UVW Template" from the Edit UVWs window, which basically renders the wireframe at any resolution you want but without coloring the insides. And if you save it as an EPS file, you can open it at any resolution afterwards.

i use 3d max

download is done, watched the movie....several times i'll still go to the cinema to watch it

I'll see if i can't get a hold of both programs and test them out to see what i like best, I should probably figure out how to use the maya softwar i have too.

hahaha i have watched it a few times myself i have a copy on my pc, and my MP3 player. Bumblebee reminds me of a little puppy, he is so cute.

you have maya too!!?? O_O

apparently maya is very cool, haven't had a chance to try it out

mudbox i believe is a freeware prog, 3d max isnt hard to get a hold of if you look in the right places

yeah >_> never got the hang of maya. Also it is on my laptop and my laptop well can't keep up with it too well, or any of my editing software for that matter, that is why I work on a desk top now. Unfortunently i don't have the key anymore for the program so i can't transfer it to my desktop.

I love freeware it is the best ^.^ hopefully i can try out some things before i have to go back to school.

most likely i will have to find a code or new software, in the mean time i just can't run any other program beside Maya unless i want my laptop to crash hahaha. The graphics card on it can't keep up either, but my desktop is awesome i rarely have any troubles with it.

natetheartist In reply to Leonnea [2009-12-13 03:01:38 +0000 UTC]

mudbox isn't freeware. But yes, it works with a tablet, just like z brush. There are things you can do in max with a tablet, though i don't know why you'd want to.

Good character models start with properly topologized base meshes. I wouldn't recommend doing all of your character modeling in mudbox, but then again, the new zspheres2 in zbrush 3.5 and 4 are very powerful.

Maya and max do the same things. Its good to know both, but in the end, you can pretty much do the same thing with either.

If you're looking for something for free. Use Blender from [link] it can do just about as much as max and maya, and its completely free.

you need to search for key generators for the progs you cant get to work...

anyway, there are quite a few freeware programs which are good and i've seen people do some crazy things on those. like DarkBanditKing is using Wings 3d for all of his mech models and the program is freeware!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leonnea In reply to ulyses [2007-07-23 00:15:36 +0000 UTC]

wow his stuff is really cool. I'll have to see what i can find on key generators (my brother handles such searches for me, i would likely mess it up). I would like to learn to make mechs, have you seen any general tutorials for them anywhere?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ulyses In reply to Leonnea [2007-07-23 09:00:41 +0000 UTC]

Mmm..unfortunately no, not for mechs. I'm not sure if you will find one, mechs come in a wide array of styles (not sure if thats the right word). But once you know the basic commands of a 3d prog you can use it to create anything, including mechs. You just need to have a basic idea in your head and off you go

if you cant find a tut, let me know i'll make you a tut on how to make the most common style of mech, just to get started

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leonnea In reply to ulyses [2007-07-23 13:25:43 +0000 UTC]

I i think styles is a good way of putting it. I'll see what I can find on them and just try somethings on my own (after i figure out what I am doing) and if I still can't manage I ask for some pointers. Might take a week or so though for me to figure out if i can or can't seem to make one lol.
