Shyamal has grown up with an admiration for music ever since he was a chick. His father's parents had moved from their indigenous clans to Memphis, Tennessee (where he got the surname) to share their elements in music, and his mother came from Vadodara, India to showcase her dancing performances to the world. So he practiced hard as a DJ, and in his early teen years went to show his talent in the clubs within reach...and he was pushed out of every single one, simply because he's an angel in a human-populated city. On his father's deathbed, he swore he would find a scene to share his skills with the world. He would eventually get a deal in some popular theater house in Santa Vida, California.

He encountered the budding Saint Idol Andy Canis on his way...but dismissed his jackal-ish elements as some sort of dumb costume, claiming he wouldn't understand what it's like to be some outcast in America. As much as Andy didn't agree with that, he couldn't really make a good argument since he was used to being a normal human for most of his life.

The next time Andy encountered Shyamal...the young raptyr was dead in an alley. Someone had drawn attention to this scene and went to call 911 about it. While that was happening, Andy frantically went to check on Shyamal, and in his flustering he accidentally cast some power into the raptyr...bringing him back to life - with an odd mark on his forehead similar to what Andy has on his chest.

Shyamal couldn't recall what happened prior to his death, and thinks that he had just passed out on the streets. Unfortunately, he later notices something while changing his clothes - a gaping wound that went deep into where his lung should be!! And then he could feel the faint taste of something nasty and...toxic?! He panicked, and several ghostly blue hands appeared and loomed from behind his back! And then, he remembered that someone had trapped him in that theater house, cut his chest open, and filled his throat with poison...

Shyamal realized that he must have been resurrected into "some...some ghost-zombie-thing"!! So he pursued Andy and demanded he explain what he did. Sure enough, the rest of the Saint Riders found him, and Seth realized that Andy had somehow turned Shyamal into a Revenant, just like they were. It was best to keep Shyamal safe from his killer until the situation had cleared, but it would be a while before Shyamal could forgive Andy for making him into even more of an outcast...

But, in time, he learned what kind of powers were unlocked in this state - the same powers of the past Saint Idol, Shiva. He understood that bad guys like the person that killed him were tearing Santa Vida apart, destroying its cultural strength. If people lose culture, they can't color the dull, gray world. Without culture, everyone and everything will become forgettable. Since he has these gifts, Shyamal decided he may as well use them to defend Santa Vida and punish the criminals for the sake of culture!

And that's how DJ Shyamal Memphis joined the Saint Riders in their battle against the Seven Diavolos!

- The Indian roller is a bird that's also known as the neelkanth, which means "blue throat". This name is also associated with Shiva, whose throat turned blue from trapping a poison there. You could say that history repeated here with Shyamal's death before revival.

- Shyamal's bipolar behavior is intended as a nod to Shiva's ambivalent nature as both a merciful creator and a vicious destroyer.

- Astras in Hinduism are any sort of supernatural weapon that a god can conjure and imbue with spiritual or occult power. The name of Shyamal's Idea: Rudra Astra comes from one of Shiva's Astras. Also, Rudra is commonly believed to be another form of Shiva.

- If it wasn't obvious, racism is an even bigger issue in UMS-Earth with the inclusion of angels among everything else. In the United States especially, it's rare to see angels outside of indigenous settlements - you can thank the witch trials (persecutions of angels and humans with mystical powers a few centuries back) for that.

- Shyamal isn't much of a fan of ice, and gets a bit annoyed when some people think he has cold powers. Yes, it's a nod to Final Fantasy's Shiva.
