Description I've been wanting to make one of these for years. It was going to be a plain white one out of plaster, but when I was at the craft store and saw all the lovely things I couldn't resist and decided to make it perdy.

Total time was a little more than two days. Here are WIPs instead of a tl;dr describing the process: [link]

You can see out of it pretty well. Not well enough to read but well enough to see where you're going without killing yourself.

Best part? My 11-year old sister coming into my room while I was working on it going "Oh hey look what I-- WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?" and me getting to explain the plague and plague doctors to her for half an hour.

I have a friend called Luned Cadwallader, who is from Wales, as I originally was before moving to the Faeroe Islands, and she is writing a wonderful and creepy book with a a cult of plague doctors as some of the villains. She is planning on publishing it, which would be great, because I really love her novels. Plague doctors are so cool, but so sinister...Did you know that they had those long beaks for stuffing herbs in, to protect them from 'unbalanced humours' or 'miasma' in the air ('cause that was how medicine worked in those days)? Actually, the herbs were often laudanum, and must have really sucked being treated by a doctor who was stoned all the time.

That sounds like an interesting story, I'd like to read it someday. Plague doctors- well not just plague doctors actually but medical history altogether is my favorite area of study so the primitive medicine of the day is quite familiar and fascinating to me. I plan to make a more historically accurate/functional mask as well in addition to my crazy steampunk imaginings and actually be able to stuff herbs into the beak.

Just don't overdo the laudanum... Yah, the book is great, all of Luned's friends - including me - are bugging the poor woman to finish. Actually, plague doctors' medicine was centered around the Four Humours, and they often prescribed bleeding, which almost always killed the patient.

Haha yeah, no laudanum. Absurd early views medicine is fascinating.

I've wanted to make one of these for so long. They are possibly my favourite historical objects. Thanks for showing your WIP shots and the finished mask looks great! I love the eyes.

That is neat; and now it's really time for you to "Bring out yer dead!" Those really remind me of this book that I had(and think I still do somewhere) about this Bird Man who wore masks and would make paper birds and flying toys for these kids. Of course had he been wearing one of those I doubt you'd want a plague ridden paper crane.

That is so amazingly cool. I like how it's all patchwork-y. Really adds character.
And of course you'll have to get pics of you wearing it.
