Description This is why I've only been online for about a total of 20 minutes in the past three days. Been slaving away from morning until night since Sunday on this thing.

We were in Ouray on Saturday and there's this awesome art shop I'm addicted to. So I'm in there thinking of ways to make a clockwork mask and BANG I see this plaster tape. The same stuff they use to put a cast on a broken bone, where it's hard and dry until you get it wet and mold it and then it dries. So I bought a roll of it, came back to town and promptly started this baby.

I used my sister's V mask as a base, covered in foil to keep from ruining it, and molded the plaster over that. Then when it dried I filled in any anomalies with wood putty, and after that dried I sanded it smooth. And since I ran out of plaster tape before I could do the edges (I didn't have the parts ), I used paper mache to finish the rest. Then I spent two of the three days painting until I'm blue in the face.

The crackle medium for the paint didn't work worth a damn. It crackled alright but totally the wrong kind of crackles. Like paint on an old wooden barn door rather than fine porcelain cracking. So I did the crackles by hand with a detail brush. *dies*

So yeah, I'm gonna be having back pain for a week after hunching over in a chair all that time. And it's far from perfect. But I love it. Can't help but be a tiny bit proud of this. I'm getting a wig too and that will be the best Halloween costume next year.

are you making a full costume or just the mask and wig? A friend an I are thinking about making a "couples" costume of the clockwork droids that we would wear to a masquerade our theater puts on. What kind of wig are you getting?

The wig would be a French wig for that era, costume stores often have very similar wigs in white but grey is harder to find. You might have to dye a wig. Essentially have a look at lots of costume shops you re looking for judges wigs, French wigs or granny wigs.

I ended up not being able to do a costume with it, but if you do some googling you should be able to find resources that have the necessary parts ;3

Wwwooooaaahhh...this is perfectly unnerving. It somewhat - actually more than somewhat - resembles a Carnecale mask from Venice. I bought a lovely fox mask there, and it had the same paint quality and glossiness as this one does. I was thinking of making a Weeping Angel, but I could be a Girlybot...
Oh, this has a V mask as a base? That explains a lot.

I'm glad you think so, unnerving was what I was going for

I adore carnecale masks, masks in general really, I plan on making a lot more like this and I need to upload pictures of some of the ones I haven't posted to dA yet.

You should do a weeping angel, that would be epic.

Nice.

That episode always used to creep my out.

(Unless these guys were in an episode with the 11th Doctor, in which case I have not caught up with the series and I am referring to the 10th.)

undead-medic In reply to LudicrousDemon [2012-03-29 21:08:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah as far as I know they haven't been in any more, I haven't caught up on the series since the 11th doctor took over either.

LudicrousDemon In reply to undead-medic [2012-03-29 21:11:18 +0000 UTC]

Alrighty then.

Yeah, 11th Doctor's series is pretty cool so far, but I really don't like what they did with the Cybermen.

THEY CHOP UP YOUR BRAINS AND PUT IT IN A BIONIC SUIT, NOT POSSESS YOU AND MAKE YOU A CYBORG. GOSH.

Anyway, I really like the mask you made.

When did you put on the decoupage finisher?

undead-medic In reply to sonickingscrewdriver [2011-05-29 02:13:32 +0000 UTC]

After everything was painted and had a day to dry

sonickingscrewdriver In reply to undead-medic [2011-05-29 12:20:23 +0000 UTC]

Ok! I just did the wood putty, though it was a bit crumbly. I think I'll need to go over the wood putty one more time, and then start painting. What did you use to raise the gold parts of the mask?

undead-medic In reply to sonickingscrewdriver [2011-05-29 17:44:03 +0000 UTC]

1 more question:

1) How many layers of plaster did you use? I've finished the first layer of plaster...do I put one more on and then start on the wood putty and sand it? Just wondering. The plaster seems a bit thin at the moment.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

undead-medic In reply to sonickingscrewdriver [2011-05-02 19:40:10 +0000 UTC]

I used quite a few layers, not sure how many, just kept building it up until it seemed sturdy enough. It's a little less than a centimeter thick

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sonickingscrewdriver In reply to undead-medic [2011-05-02 22:02:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I've done two more layer so far, and now I'm trying to let it dry. It seems to take forever.

undead-medic In reply to sonickingscrewdriver [2011-05-03 00:01:50 +0000 UTC]

It dries reallllly slow, but it'll be worth it

sonickingscrewdriver In reply to undead-medic [2011-05-03 11:15:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh, definitely! The next step is the wood putty, right? I was going to do that yesterday, but when my mom read the label, she saw that there were toxic fumes and it was extremely flammable, and she said I couldn't open it until my dad got home. Grr.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

undead-medic In reply to sonickingscrewdriver [2011-05-03 23:37:32 +0000 UTC]

Yup, once the plaster is completely dry. If you open a window when you use the stuff it'll be fine Then just sand it when that dries.

sonickingscrewdriver In reply to undead-medic [2011-05-04 01:42:48 +0000 UTC]

Ok! I just put on even more plaster. The plaster is slowly drying, though it should be done by morning. I will do that! I can't wait for this to be finished...

Unfortunately I don't have a wig for it, I just took a picture of the mask on a dark colored sheet.

Hehe, no you aren't. I'm a bit nervous about asking any of my friends about what they're being for Halloween, because they will probably look at me like I'm crazy.

Yes, I just have to make that mask...I'm begging my dad for wood putty at the moment.

undead-medic In reply to sonickingscrewdriver [2011-04-13 00:48:33 +0000 UTC]

Like I wrote in the description I had planned on wearing it for Halloween but I couldn't find a wig or an outfit so I just ended up being the Joker again.

Aha! Yes, it seems that wigs are a bit hard to find.

I'm going to look for the right kind of wig really hard...but I don't know if I'll find one.
