Description hellooo! how is everyone? I'm not dead

okay, so I finally made the tutorial. I know it's waaay overdue (I think it's been about 2-3 months since I last logged on deviantart...) but I've been really really busy. I kinda still am but I felt the need to procrastinate so I made this

It's kinda half-assed, I know, but I'll add or change things if needed. I'm very open to suggestions, so shoot. Also, if you spot any grammar or word order mistakes, please tell me so I can fix them

So yeah, enjoy!

what kind of paper are you using?

Origami paper.

is the paper glossy? i never actually used proper origami paper, just regular white A4 printing paper and I have a block of colorful square papers (basically post-it without the glue). the twists might slip off if the paper is too glossy..

Seraphim-Sisters In reply to undoMeds [2013-04-18 20:17:59 +0000 UTC]

Nope, it's not glossy origami paper. Just regular.
Maybe printing paper works best because it's much thicker? Proper origami paper is usually thinner.

undoMeds In reply to Seraphim-Sisters [2013-04-18 20:44:34 +0000 UTC]

it might be, but i think it's really odd that paper made specifically for origami won't hold the curls i simply twist them really tight with my fingers, and when i have two or three curls twisted together, i tighten it with tweezers to secure them, and i haven't had problems so far

how big are the units? i usually find that the smaller the piece of paper, the sturdier and the better it holds

Seraphim-Sisters In reply to undoMeds [2013-04-18 22:12:58 +0000 UTC]

Maybe there are thicker origami paper that is better suited, I dunno. I twist them really tight too but when it comes to getting the last piece for each level on it always comes apart.

I took regular size origami paper and cut them to smaller pieces (one sheet becomes four). I prefer using smaller paper anyway.

Is it a bad idea to use regular origami paper? I'm afraid I've already made the bases, but I can't get the beginning curls to stay. xD;;

Missingno413 [2012-03-22 10:54:30 +0000 UTC]

Is it sturdy when it is completed? I have made a lot of kusudamas, but never curler balls, since the fact that it uses curls discourages me to make them [I think it might fall apart easily].

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

undoMeds In reply to Missingno413 [2012-03-22 12:47:26 +0000 UTC]

you have to make the curls really tight, otherwise they will fall apart. use tweezers to really twist them together and they should hold just fine

I used these colors so people can tell the difference better between each curly unit. good ol' strong primary colors

ah! okay, i dont mean to sound stupid, but what is the difference between a valley fold and a moutain fold??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

undoMeds In reply to aradia430 [2011-05-15 11:37:16 +0000 UTC]

sorry for answering so late

a mountain fold will look like, well, a mountain when you unfold it (it points upwards) and the valley points to the ground

this and this are pretty good examples on how they look. hope it helps!

I just had some experience: magazine paper is too thin to curl well! And stay curled! But I really wanted to do one in pages from a magazine, so now I've sewed the modules together Just if some likes to try it

hellbunny [2011-02-18 06:57:23 +0000 UTC]

*whew*! Just did one of these! How do you get the twists between the units so tight? Especially as the model has progressed, I had a bit of trouble with that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

undoMeds In reply to hellbunny [2011-02-19 12:25:59 +0000 UTC]

i sometimes use tweezers when there are all 3 colors in the twist helps keep it from falling apart

hellbunny In reply to undoMeds [2011-02-19 21:07:10 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I'll have to try that on mine. It's together, but... Well, it's very sloppy by comparison.

Just wondering but what was the color pattern you used it the original picture?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

undoMeds In reply to XxXfallen-X-angelXxX [2010-11-10 15:29:03 +0000 UTC]

I used 6 solid colored units and 12 white ones with colored edges (I just used a marker of the same color when I finished folding them in that triangle shape)

following the tutorial, just replace the red and white units with the white ones and you'll get that pattern
