Description Update on 14.01.2009: Update of the picture: I started the editing from scratch and then increased quality, colors and light - especially with the background. I also changed the framing style to my new one. Now the quality is good enough to finally be sold as a print!

_________

This is the second part of the White Eagle Portraits.

This is the first part (which I consider as better): "If Looks Could Kill" .

_________
My internal ranking
- Very sharp photo, very expressive... light is good too.

Bald eagles are such beautiful creatures. You really make them justice with your photos.

With quality I mean that I - when redoing it - took the full size instead of cropping it to 800 pixels.

With colors I meant the usual saturation in Photoshop, whereas I put special focus on the yellow areas.

With the light it was the most interesting part. I don't know what they are called in English Photoshop but it I brightened up the darker areas like the eyes and the whole frontside that you see with something like Picture -> Modify -> Dephts and Lights (?) where you can brighten up dark areas and darken too light areas (I had to do that too as the white fur was overexposed in some parts). Then you could see the feathers, which I sharpened manually. And the background was pretty dark but not this black, so I did that too.

Not sure if you could learn something out of that

I assumed you started with the full size....there are many was to saturate a photo I was just wondering how you did it......the brighter/lighter thing.....would that be like dodging and burning
How do you manually sharpen feather.....inquiring minds are inquiring

UnUnPentium115 In reply to ernieleo [2009-01-17 00:35:03 +0000 UTC]

I use CTRL+U and then increase the saturation maybe +15.
I guess but the brighter tool just takes the darkest parts and brightens them up, not the total image. If you take a picture against the sun, it's the tool to see people though.

There is - right above the dodging thing - a tool to sharpen or blur the scene. Choose sharpen and then maybe 30%-50% and then brush over the parts you need to sharpen.

What do you use to sharpen images?

I sharpen the whole image....I dulipacate the layer and set the new layer from normal to overlay and then Filter->Other->Highpass.....now you can set the degree of sharpness you want......and then flatten the layers....[link]

Look how disheveled he looks on the top of his head. How do you manage to capture such moments? Whenever I take a shot, like with my dogs for instance, they tend to move. Hard to keep them still.

It is hard to catch them at the right moment but if you made it it's worth waiting and trying

thanks, yes they are indeed!
At a show in Styria-Austria, but this ones are quite hard to take because there is a little fence between us with just very small holes to photograph through..
