Description A fish warrior, a coral reef, light shining through water...what more can one ask? This painting is about two years old now, but still one of my favorites. It's also a CD cover for "Evolution Theory" by the band Rare Earth.

As for what I was thinking while painting--well, I hate traditional shell-brassiered mermaids with a passion bordering on the religious, and so I set out to make something a little more adapted to his environment, with the brilliant markings of a reef fish. And, since I despise the work of Lassen with an equal passion, I limited myself to things actually found on reefs, which generally don't include multiple species of whale, white tiger cubs, pastel planets, or equally sacchrine derivations.

The entire piece is stunning, but I especially love the surface of the water at the top!

Also, I've just spent the last hour flipping through your amazing gallery! It took me a minute before I realized where I had seen your style from before.. ^_^;; Three of my close friends have framed copies (don't know if they're the originals.. I believe they bought them at Anthrocon) of your water and wind mouse hanging in their dining room. I love seeing those two pieces everytime I visit them!

you are an amazing artist. your painting skills are mucho nifty. i love this peice becuase it's not the usual mermaid that people would automatically assume. it is mucho beautiful.

The artist must not only train his eyes, but also his soul.

I'm so glad I took the time to pore through your entire gallery today. This is wonderful. I do like mermaids, but I've never been under the illusion that they're particularly well adapted to their environment. They'd go extinct rather quickly, I'd think. As a co-worker of mine likes to say, "Mermaids are a waste - not enough woman to love and not enough fish to eat..."

i share your sentiments on the classical mermaid idea, i guess mine are a lot closer to those than yours are...but i still hate those with a passion, how they bend at the 'knees' and only have scales on half their bodies, and the perfectly human upper half...i agree! i haven't seen a lot of lassen's work, and i don't really hate it, but i wouldn't ever do anything similar so still more kudos to you! i don't know if you'd want to listen to me ranting so i'll just shut up about my style of sentient sea-creatures, but yours is definitely cool. i loved the sewer mermaid too.

Well, when it comes to painting mythical creatures, a dose of realism doesn't hurt. This guy looks like something that you just might encounter on a reef somewhere, whereas a standard mermaid -- with or without shell brassiere -- has never been anything more than a lonely mariner's wet dream (pardon the pun!)

Textures are great, the water (with its surface turbulence and the light filtering down from above) looks just about right -- and, once I saw it, I just loved the big-lipped fish down the bottom in the shadows. Nice touch...

i agree about the mermaids. I like the movie "little mermaid" (hey childhood memoirs) but hate shell-covered breasts with an unrealistic fish tail. I also have made my own mermaids and i love this reef one! I love it! reminds me of a lion fish, but anyway great work on the merman design and the coral reef, kudos like the rest of your work
