Eggs usually start out good. A good egg is pretty inoffensive. But sometimes eggs go bad. And Mortimer was a very bad egg indeed.As a child, I always found Humpty Dumpty to be kinda creepy. And stupid. I mean, how dumb does an egg have to be to go sitting on walls? And who's bright idea was it to send the king's horses to put him back together? Reassembling an egg would be nearly impossible with tweezers, magnifying glasses, and opposable thumbs, let along trying to do it with mondo hooves. Idiocy. But creepy. And I'd been sort've blocked lately, and looking at a lot of art by the incomparable James Christensen, and the next thing you know...Mortimer, and the little egg-beater wielding assassin. Die, wicked egg!

You do know humpty dumpty is named after a cannon. An 18th century cannon named humpty was set on a wall to blast the invading army. It was to heavy and calapsed into pieces. The kings horses and men represent the kings horses and men trying to rebuild it.

this egg has been killing me for some time, because i remembered something like this, i thought that humpty dumpty was a fairy tale or something like that, didn't know the name either and couldn't find it anywhere. now i finally found it thanks to your art

Actually, Humpty Dumpty was originally a cast iron cannon sitting on the wall of some English fortress... can't remember which one. Some idiot commander fired it wrong and it fell off and shattered. The rhyme was made up to taunt the English.

Interesting... I'd heard that Humpty Dumpty was a name used to parody an historical figure, a prince or somesuch, who went into battle in armour so heavy he had to be lifted onto his warhorse (who was either named Wall, or like a wall for being bred big enough to carry his rider and the period armour), fell off in the middle of the battle and got himself killed. "All the King's horses" etc. would have had something to do with the futility of fighting after that - winning couldn't bring him back to life.
Maybe we're both right, and one was named for the other.
