Description Well...this is my helmet i usually wear when i play wood elf...as wood elf i normally wear loads of armour so obviously i needed a helmet as well ^^

-Its got a 1,2mm steel skull, so that would actually make it a steel helmet...but its not visible so I just posted it in leatherwork
-4mm waterformed and gluehardened leather

This is rather awesome. It looks like the front sigils also serve as vents, fantastic idea.

When you say glue-hardened are you referring to some sort of resin (epoxy resin or polyesyer resin) or another hardening substance?

This reminds me so much of the wood elves of Athel Loren and of the Wanderers. I would so want an more "Rangery" helmet looking something like this for Larping Warhammer...gosh, you are amazing!

I am so inspired of your awsome work. Thanx for sharing. (By the way, what means "gluehardened"? I know the wax-, water, soda and boiling-method, but I have never heard of that.) Anyway. Awsome work. In the drow-version i see a white horseΒ΄s-tail instead of the Fabric.

Thank you...I'm happy you like it ^^

Glue-hardening as I do it is actually quite easy.
I just soak the leather in water with a little soap for a couple of hours, then I let it dry (sometimes with heat...as in baking it a little), then I colour it with a alcohol-based dye. I use a mix of water and wood glue (PVA/white glue) and brush multiple layers on the backside of the leather...and then it gets rock hard.
-In this way of doing it the soap and alcohol are rather important as they remove oils in the leather...the oils are then replaced with the glue.

Sounds interesting. I have to try that. I think with this procedure the leather will become less cracky than in other techniques like boiling, will it?Β

Valimaa In reply to Derle-Derer [2014-06-18 09:35:14 +0000 UTC]

yeah..when done right it dosnt crack at all. After some time though, when you've hardened a piece that gets squished and moved, it tends to unharden...then just apply some more glue ^^

to me this is not the look of a common wood elf foot soldier.. rather a high ranked wood elf stealth assassin. or since steel inforced, the Heavy infantry commander of course...
awesome leatherwork!
reminds me to caracters from a book.. forgot the title. was about a dragonryder tribe that wears masks against the hot breath of their beasts.

This is truly awesome work. I really like thecrests and the way you've formed shape and edges. I do not know if this is knowledge you'd like to share, but how the hell did you do it ? was it shaped on a form (plastic head or something like that?).
Masterpiece...

MerrillsLeather [2011-07-31 15:17:34 +0000 UTC]

ive spent a good amount of time on DA looking around for leather inspiration. and this helm stands out as one of the tops. ive come across. ive only been doing leather work since jan and i know enough to spot something well done. ive just started forming leather and this shows how much more i have to learn. it has a gladiator/ predator feel too it, the burlap threw me off for a second but it works well. the "ponytail" took it that extra step further...
do you use any forms you hammer into or on, or tools. i tried making a basic mask to try and i just couldnt get the ridges to have that much pop...
again thank you for sharing your work and providing the rest of us some inspiration to keep working at it!

Valimaa In reply to MerrillsLeather [2011-08-09 11:10:35 +0000 UTC]

Thank you ^^

-Im happy you notice the "predator" in there...cos thats one of the things I was going for ^^
-I usually dont use forms as such...apart from hammering the leather into my coffeecup(cos thats usually close by XD) to get domed shapes...or hammering onto a screwdriver to get ridges...but other than thet I mostly use a ballpoint hammer, a tiny anvil...and my hands

How do you get those ridges?

That's something I havent been able to figure out when I work with leather.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Valimaa In reply to Sylrae [2011-05-04 14:17:50 +0000 UTC]

hmm...make it wet...fold it...wack it with a hammer
-I usually make them kinda like you would in metal...alot of hitting with hammer while it dries

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Sylrae [2011-05-04 09:04:24 +0000 UTC]

How do you harden leather with glue? I've not heard of that method before.

Are you just painting glue overtop?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Valimaa In reply to Sylrae [2011-05-04 14:24:53 +0000 UTC]

well...on this one I didnt paint it on the front side since i wanted it to feel and look like leather...instead I only painted it onto the back of the leather.

-I use PVA white glue (the stuff for gluing wood) mix it ca 1/20-ish with water and just paint it onto the back of the leather. U'll get a harder/better result if you before that died the leather with alcohol based die (alcohol desolves the oils and wax in the leather) and if you waterformed it (making it wet with warm soapwater will also remove the oils in the leather)...so the glue will replace the oils in the leather and...well...make it hard ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Valimaa In reply to GriffinLeather [2011-04-17 08:12:49 +0000 UTC]

thanks ^^

-Yeah I just use PVA white glue...the stuff you'd normally use outdoors for wood, diluted 1/20(ish) in water and just painted on the backside in multible layers
-I used to try out epoxy for hardening...that works rather well too...but the curing is boringly long...so now I just use the white glue ^^

Got it, like the tanners bond brand. Poly Vinyl Acetate.
I thought you were talking about the animal based glues.

I personally like the polyester resins. A bit tricky to use but very effective.
