Description This little fella was in the tree outside of the house. He is an Australian Possum and differs to the Opossum found in the USA.
"Possums along with kangaroos and koalas are iconic Australian fauna.  Another Aussie icon, Dame Edna Everage, fondly used the term “Hello possums!” in her stage and TV shows.. Australians have always lived alongside these small nocturnal marsupials. Possums are mainly herbivores (plant eaters), favouring eucalyptus and other leaves, ferns, buds, flowers and fruits.  Brushtail Possums are known to be tolerant of many plant toxins and will eat trees that other animals find poisonous."

Yes, definitely!  I wish I had a bunch of those in my backyard! lol

I do like American possums, but they are sort of ugly-cute at best.  Here's an example:

They also do not stay in one place long I am told. Last year there was a little one in our back yard. My husband coaxed it into a pail and took it to the animal shelter because the mom was not around and we feared it would be hurt by other predators as we have hawks at times in our area. I hear they are quite smart as well. Great shot dear Ann

They tend to have their territory here. We have a mother who comes here a lot. She often has a baby clinging to her It must have got too big for the pouch.

At some point they do outgrow their mom's pouches and get adventurous so that is probably the situation with this little one.

Lovely shot Ann. I have never, knowingly, lived with one. I've heard they can be quite noisy at night, but I'm sure not as bad as the wombats who used to visit me each night in their never ending attempt to dig a tunnel under the house. Everyday we had to go out and fill it back in, or risk the house falling down!

vanndra In reply to BGai [2018-05-20 04:05:51 +0000 UTC]

We've never had trouble with the noise. We have one that lives in the  carport when she has a baby. She hides on top of the timber there. We occasionally hear "thumpity thump" on the roof, but not a problem

I haven't seen a wombat up here other than at the Billabong Sanctuary. Saw a Duck Billed Platypus once at a place called Wallaman Falls, just up the road from us.

Thank you Ilona. They are very cute. We rescued one years ago, when the kids were small. The mother had been hit by a car, she was dead. We found the baby in her pouch, about the size of my thumb. We put him in a sock and got some special baby milk for him. He survived. He used to terrorise the cats stealing their food. If we got visitors he would hide in the wardrobe. We had to send him back to the bush when he was big enough. A wonderful experience
