I can tell that you're not a New Zealander, Ann. They would have shot it on sight!

Yes. I heard that they do that - disgusts me actually. The possum is a native of Australia and, poor thing, through no fault of it's own someone decided to take some over there and now they shoot them

They are really beautiful little creatures (although some males aren't so little). I can't remember if I mentioned somewhere that I raised one. It's mother had been hit by a car and the tiny little hairless creature was in her pouch. I put him in a sock (about the size of my thumb) - made a few pouches from old socks - and talked to the pharmacist about some special baby formula. He progressed from sock pouches to pillow case pouches . He used to have a saucer of tea with me ( I used a cup )and a biscuit. We had two cats at the time and he was really cheeky and used to chase them from their biscuits and run off with some in his little hands. He used to hide from me in the wardrobe if he didn't want to go in his huge cage that my husband made out of a very large packing case. It had bits of trees in it etc. He used to sit on my shoulder while I pegged the washing out - he'd climb up there of his own accord .

Parks and wildlife helped us rehabilitate him with the wild as soon as he was old enough. Not sure what he did about his cups of tea in the bush!

We have a female that lives around our place at the moment. She comes here when she has aΒ baby to look after.

What a nice story, Ann! Raising a wee possum from pouch to pouch - sock it to me! I have no cogent idea what the New Zealanders ought to do about their possums. They say that the possums destroy trees and wild life, and need to be eradicated. They use poisons, and have extermination hunting parties, but still the possums proliferate. All the other animals including deer came from the outside world as NZ was free of animal life before Man arrived. Yet, sheep, cattle, goats, rats, mice, cats, dogs are all fine. Possums though are bad. One question that I thought about when I visited the South Island a few years ago was why was the habitat in NZ so favourable for possums that they have proliferated in such large numbers. Surely, there are other competing pressures that would lead to a stabilisation of the population. I did wonder whether there was a difference between the real problem and the perceived one.

They are so cute, Ann.
I only know them from the Zoo. Great to see them in their own habitat.

Yes. They are beautiful. I raised one many years ago. His mum was killed by a car. When I looked in the pouch, here was this little thing, barely bigger than my finger, with no hair/fur. Someone told me to just "knock it on the head"!!! Well the little one used socks for it's pouch and then pillow cases. We had to get special baby food from the chemist. He grew in to a very big possum before we were able to release him, but he was a very special part of our family while he stayed

Yes, they are gorgeous Adam. They are marsupials. There are a lot on the island here and the tourists feed them so they get a bit bold and come and see what's going on

People in my country usuallyΒ  feed titmouses and blackbirds at winter, so birds can come at hand for food.
