Yeah, the original Daiku Maryu, or the Space Dragon as it was called in the Force Five translation, did have a Giant Cutter attack that came out of the dragon's main body. In the Gaiking remake "Gaiking: Legend of Daiku Maryu", the Giant Cutter was given to a different mechanical dragon, the Tenkuu Maryu, where it had the ability to detach the Giant Cutter so it could be wielded by its respective robot, Raiking.

"based on...?" Well, there are several ways to answer that. If you were referring to what the robot is, it's pretty much covered in the Description, particularly the link to the pencilled line art. Basically, Gaiking is one of the classic giant robots from the 70-80's, and pretty much my first favorite giant robot.
The pose is nothing special, it's pretty common. I mainly thought of the scale of the robot, and put more size near the feet, to add to the effect. Joints and stuff were inspired by modern joint designs for action figures, just made more mechanical.

I meant was he based on an overall thing, like (and I know he's not now, he's still awesome) an ultraman villan, you know, same name, new look. P.S. HE RULES!

Thanks! If you get the chance, I would suggest checking out the anime remake of the Daiku Maryu Gaiking series. Modern animation, but chock-full of the good stuff found in classic giant robot anime, and plus it's a good two seasons long, which is neither too short or too long when it comes to completing a story.

AH! Found it. I totally overlooked this when I was looking for where your avatar came from. I noticed it when I went to the Tformers.com link you provided and saw your avi there. Nice.
