Description it occurs to me I do a lot of these 'character sheets', huh...

Anyway, this is a concept I'd had rattling around for ages for a new "Scooby-Doo" universe where Velma is the main character and de-facto "leader" of the group (as she should have always been - FIGHT ME ).

The premise is Velma has a blog (the titular "Mystery.Inc") where she solves submitted mysteries under a pseudonym (open to suggestions; something 'easter-eggy') with near-flawless success, resulting in modest internet acclaim.

Little does she know that one of her fans actually goes to her high school and has figured out her identity, and in the middle of writing a new post she's approached by them. Who is it? None other than the ultra-popular school hero, Fred Jones (who, unbeknownst to most, is apparently quite the detective himself ).

From there things escalate quickly: He convinces her to start solving mysteries in the field, starting with some strange goings-on in their town. Their success draws the attention (and jealous ire ) of the school's Queen Bee, Daphne Blake, who - despite the image she strives to maintain - is really just as sharp and calculating as either them.

At first Daphne is only interested in "saving" her dear Freddie and returning everything to status quo, but once she gets a taste of that sweet mystery solving mojo (and a new appreciation for the wonderful Velma) she's in it just as hard as the two of them. Later on Shaggy and Scooby are roped in, at first just for their car - which he taxis them in in exchange for food (I know it's typically crediting as being Fred's car; but in this version it'll be Shaggy's to start, but then later on they all work to turn it into the tried and true "Mystery Machine" we all know and love) - but later he becomes as much a part of the team as anyone, with Scooby as their mascot.
------------
This version will borrow some elements from several older series, but there's also some fairly new beats as well:

- The team will be younger than usual and have to deal with school, parents, chores and other responsibilities besides JUST solving mysteries.
- There'll be many different kinds of mysteries and they'll a bit less fantastical. In other words, they WON'T all be caused by crooks disguised as monsters/ghosts (those'll be special/built-up-to events). As a result...
- Monster encounters will be more intense, scary and physical (involving makeshift weapons, pepper spray, tasers, and other forms of self defense); the classic "trapping" method comes in later as their safer alternative
- Scooby will be less cowardly and act more like a dog (he'll be as sentient and expressive as he normally is, but he won't straight up "talk" like he usually does; think "Brain" from 'Inspector Gadget')
- Scooby and Shaggy will still be the "cowards" of the group, but it'll be a more pragmatic 'Why don't we just call the cops right now?' sort of thing; they like helping people but not as gung-ho about the danger as the others
- But - perhaps MOST controversially - in this AU I will ship FredxVelma and ShaggyxDaphne, because I am a sick fiend and I need to be stopped.

...No, I'm serious.

I like this idea. I've been disappointed with the more recent versions of the Scooby Gang ("Mystery Inc" fell apart and the lack of comrade-ship of "Be Cool" bothers me) so this sounds like something that would be right up my ally. It hits several nice beats and evokes "Pup", "What's New" and classical in a blend that works quite well with a modern setting.

By jove, Colli, you've nailed it again; I do indeed see this more as a spiritual successor to "Pup" than to the other versions.
In fact, when I imagine the characters speak, I hear matured versions of the "Pup" actors rather than the adults'.

Holy...this is awesome! The designs are pretty awesome as well. I also like the changes that you'll make such as some of the monsters not being caused by crooks. Same for actually including self-defense mechanisms such as pepper spray.

This is a cool idea! I would totally watch this show!

Fun Fact: If you can track down some scans of the 70s Scooby comics, they're actually pretty interesting because they ditch the "Scooby Speak" (probably because it's too hard to translate into a comic book) and have Scooby behave like a real dog. So he's a lot less cowardly and more prone to physically defend himself by lunging at or biting a villain it they try to hurt him or his friends! Also, the audience sees what Scooby is thinking via thought bubbles (most of his thoughts are questioning why his human friends get into dumb/dangerous situations LOL); but the human characters cannot understand him and basically treat him like a normal dog.

Interesting character designs I gotta say! Sounds like an interesting series you got in mind. Sounds kinda like the Mystery Incorporated series, which I gotta see has to be my fav version of the series.

I didn't 100% agree with all the character treatments but I appreciated their willingness to try something so different.

I do like this idea of yours, this reminds me of this comic series Scooby: Apocalypse

Will "Danger-prone" Daphne keep bungling the traps?

Vederick In reply to Sword-King [2019-07-28 11:26:59 +0000 UTC]

From time to time; she's a bit arrogant and headstrong in this one because she's also very smart, but her impatience and overconfidence will often result in the aforementioned "bungling" against a crook or monster every so often.
On balance, though, all the characters will have their fair share of triumphs/failures; it won't all just get dumped on any one of them as if it were their defining trait - even Shag and Scooby.

Fair enough. I can't exactly make a whole cartoon show, but hopefully I'll get to expand on this premise later like with my other stuff.

Thanks, Lee!

I'd been thinking about 'crossing the streams' (ship-wise) for a good while, and this might sound weird but the 'Be Cool Scooby-Doo' series actually encouraged me even more: I really liked Fred and Velma's dynamic there,
and honestly? Shaggy, Scooby-Doo and Daphne came off almost like they were their kids.

You're welcome! =^_^=

My knowledge of Scooby-Doo mostly the basics. I've watched bits and pieces of the series here and there, the only series I watched all the way through was "Mystery Incorporated". I think the idea of Shaggy, Scooby, and Daphne being their kids sounds pretty interesting actually.
