Description Recently I have visited Marrakech, Morocco. This was my first journey to a Muslim country and I collected some very interesting observations. Of course Marrakech is a tourism hotspot and, in some parts, it even has a cosmopolitan feeling to it and therefore some of these observations may not even be extendible to the rest of the country.

It caught my attention that, like in most places, the people of Marrakech are not all equally religious or, at least, tend to religion in different ways. This was more evident in women whose attire ranged from the pious burqa to the most westernised revealing outfits with everything in-between walking side by side with each other. This drawing attempts to illustrate this gradient of female attitudes in Moroccan society which I found very interesting.

The drawing is also heavily inspired and, dare I say, a homage to one of my favourite graphic novelists: Marjane Satrapi, author of "Persepolis". [link]

This is beautiful, the concept is lovely, and the feeling very Escher and yet the reference of Marjane Satrapi. Makes a beautiful mix , favorite.

Very nice drawing - reminds me of my visit to Casablanca - you really see a full range, from Niqab to tee shirts and jeans. And Persepolis is an awesome graphic novel

Is this extensible? I'm sure we can easily fit a new row of modern women

The last row should represent them.

This is very good. Any particular reason why the hidden women are at the top of the image?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Velica In reply to The-Mirrorball-Man [2010-10-04 12:59:12 +0000 UTC]

Thats the way I pictured it in my head. Why? Maybe because I like to read it top-down, with women becoming less covered as you go through.

I like also how the go from serious to cheerful.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Velica In reply to Tordo [2010-10-03 21:39:40 +0000 UTC]

This was not by accident. The less covered women do seem to be more cheerful, at least on the outside.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tordo In reply to Velica [2010-10-03 22:04:15 +0000 UTC]

That's what I thought, it may have something to do with the possibility that those women have a bit less restricted way of leaving, but like you said, that's only what we can guess from the outside.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Velica In reply to Tordo [2010-10-04 00:10:56 +0000 UTC]

Or maybe its our biased liberal views that make it seem like they are happier.

Gracias por el comentario! Un abrazo de Portugal.

Wow, I like the black and white contrast...ItΒ΄s funny how the clothing gradually lessens...You captured it very interestingly in the chain style ...
