As they descended, a melody became audible. The deeper they travelled, the stronger it insisted. It was a beautiful, eerie tune, slow and reassuring.

Luckily, they weren’t dragons. If they had been even a little reptilian they might’ve been affected in a more dramatic way. Even so, they felt the music washing away at their worries.

“Nye.” Syrren had been jabbing him in the side regularly since the music became audible to keep him alert. She’d encountered the source of this tune before, and knew how to regain her focus. Her partner, with his weaker will and stronger senses, was much more susceptible to it.

She’d usually allow him to indulge, but she was relying on him to detect the guards. She knew it was inevitable that they would encounter someone, and they were unlikely to be a weak “someone”.

“Ahh! Geez, you’re poking me harder each time!” Nye shook his head briskly, as if shaking off the soothing sound. “That music is potent.”

“We’re near the lowest floor. Do you sense anything?”

Nye had to focus particularly hard. The miasmic melody filling the air seemed to dull his ability to sense emotions. He scrunched his eyes shut and covered his ears, trying to block out the assault on his senses from the music and the unnerving flames that lit the stairwell.

There it is, quite close. Aside from the excited, alert one by his side, there were a jumble of mainly negative shapes. A few. But the one he sensed first and strongest, utter terror...

He violently shuddered involuntarily, and slumped on the cold stone stair.

“Nye?” He looked exhausted already. She hoped he would be up to fending off the guards.

“Ugh. I can’t pinpoint how many exactly, there’s someone down there who is terrified. It’s painful... to sense... We’ll have to chance this, I can’t keep it up long in here anyway.” He was slipping back under the influence of the eerily comforting tune, he thought it’d be nice to take a nap.

“Right!” Syrren jabbed a claw into his shoulder once more, eliciting a sharp little yelp. “Let’s get it done then.”

“Ack! Right. Let’s-”

“Who’s there?”

“Crap.” Syrren cursed quietly. “It’s Crags.”

She had identified the gravelly, menacing growl correctly. A misshapen and lumpy crimson head ducked out of the archway below. Damn, so much for the element of surprise!

“Go” she whispered into her own overgrown mane. “The door’s just behind him, on the right.”

She barely saw him, but she felt Zooka jump from his hiding spot in her mane. The tailwind caused the unusual torch flames to flicker slightly.

“Intruuuuddderrrrs!” bellowed Crags, and suddenly a Fraxure joined him in the archway. Neither of them had noticed the Whimsicott casually swish past them.

Perfect, Syrren thought.

Story added 06/12, it's rough and not proofread really, sorry.
(Also, the "plot hole" is not a plot hole. I promise!)

Hmm, they've come to the bottom of the temple it seems... only a short way to go! (besides those two dragons that is)

Doing missions wouldn't be worth much to me unless I was experimenting, failing and improving as a result. XD
