Description I thought that this tutorial might be of particulate interest of some of you folks out there, spending awful amount of time on hard surface models.

I've created this tutorial back in 2008 when I was fanatically interested in getting super clean type of hard surface modeling, but one that won't take me so time to create it. So I came up with really nice technique utilizing what was then third party plug-in for 3dsmax called polyboost , now integrated in the package.

The technique is really good because it enables you to work with big primary volumes and shapes first and then progress to the smallest detail. It is also very forgiving regarding correct topology which so much bothers beginner modellers.

The .rar archive contains 23 slides like the ones shown in the preview image here, supported with explanations.

To be more exact it is part of a workshop I did and there is 1 hour long video full with demonstrations. Unfortunatelly it is in Bulgarian (now you will blame me forever ). Anyway, you can find it here vimeo.com/13956397

Hope you find it useful, and I would like to hear your comments

Cheers!

You're welcome.

I just realized the link in the description doesn't work.
Here is proper one - vimeo.com/13956397
The video is in Bulgarian, but you see the steps in action.

Cheers!

It says in step two "using the retopo workflow described earlier"... Do you have a link to that...can't find that anywhere... Great tut though I'm gonna give this a try so

hey man, I had to zip it, not rar it in first place, sorry about that. Just rightclick the file and extract its contents (you need winzip or winrar installed on your machine).

hi.. I really like the technique but I can't find polyboost for 3ds max 2012. Which version do you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VertexBee In reply to Echoes93 [2012-04-17 16:23:29 +0000 UTC]

Hi , well since max 2010 the polyboost is part of the whole program. It is now called graphite modeling tools. You can find the same old polyboost options and buttons scattered within the new max interface.
Cheers!

Thanks for this

I don't use 3D Studiomax, but, I'm sure I can find a way to apply it to other programs I use.

You are welcome The cool thing about this technique is that it is applyable to almost every modeling package, you just need
to have some sort of retopology toolset so it would be efficient. Maya has NEX, 3dsmax has polyboost, modo has good retopo tools, there are standalone apps such as topogun dedicated to retopology only, so yes I'm sure you can apply it

10x , Danik, drop me a line to tell me how you find the workflow when you test it out or if there is something not clear enough about it.

Because I graduated from a gaming course this was all extremely clear, I focused on concept art though and so my modeling skills have become a rusty. Your tutorial presented a much more efficient way for me to get back into modeling and hopefully pump out some seriously good looking models, it could even get my skills up with enough practice to get me from applying for just 2d and concept artist positions and start applying to be a character artist.

Definitely! Right now I'm just doing some rough animations for the concept so this way my portfolio will show that I fully developed the idea, its going to be a long process but also so much fun
