In the original photo, one of the most intriguing things about the mushroom is the way the cap is sort of two-toned: it goes from deep red to orange, maybe where the light is most intense. Do you think this effect could be achieved by making the cap out of yellow clay and then painting it with a red glaze, instead of just making it out of red clay?

Oh yes, it would look even more realistic! I would say may be make the caps out of yellow mixed with translucent and then dust with red pastel chalk or paint with oil paint.
