Description It's been 11 days, but finally some art haha. And long overdue one too, because I beat PMD : RRT at least a week back!
I honestly just love Poke'mon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team. I did as a kid, and that spanned as a love addiction for practically 2 years, so picking it up again was a huge nostalgic mistake haha. Now I'm literally so back into it again and it's just spanned so many drawing ideas. I love it. Without games, I kinda get stuck in a huge art block because there's no material, but once I finish playing them or watching a silent commentary on them (because I'm very poor but I'll be downloading emulators soon), I instantly get these magical ideas that could last for a pretty darn long time! So yeah, bless video games! Give me sweet material!

So uh... yeah! This is an artwork based upon the final battle you have with Rayquaza (woah spoilers), but I won't be revealing what leads up to the situation. I originally played as a Skitty in my childhood, but replaying it I'm a Totodile and I feel like what they gave me suits me as a person way more than a Skitty. My partners were a Charmander whom I named after my brother, and a Swablu based around the Swablu I loved as a kid that I evolved into an Altaria, Okki. Sky Tower was a place I could never access again as a kid, because I didn't know Wonder Mail existed, so thinking I'll never see it again (because I didn't know they'd save and put me into the menu screen), I cherished every moment of entering that final main story dungeon and made sure to be well prepared until the final battle.

Soooo, the artwork itself. I LOVED doing the lineart and I ESPECIALLY LOVED doing the shading and lighting. You don't know how much I love that kinda stuff. It's just so nice to see small details like slight light somewhere. The more difficult things were the lighting of the fire and the clouds, as well as the background itself. I think the background came out pretty mediocre at best, and that tells me I need to work on backgrounds more haha! Also I thought that sun thing looked great, but right now it looks ok at best.

Um... yeah! This was long overdue but I guess in someways it was worth my time, and I enjoyed doing what I was doing! So have at you!

Media used-
Sketchbook, an index finger and a phone

I hope you enjoy it and as always-
Rayquaza, Swablu, Charmander and Totodile belong to Poke'mon and Nintendo
Art belongs to me!Β (please credit or ask if you ever decide to use it!)

Yep! Back when they didn't look ferocious and terrifying.
Ok maybe not Okki in terms of those two words.

This is the Red Rescue Team time, and since those guys came after Gen 3 they aren't in this particular part of the story.

Awesome picture! Red Rescue Team is my favourite PMD game even now - I've got a few theories as to why it's still got that appeal. Great choice of composing the scene vertically, really uses the sense of being in the air! I also like how I can tell what moves the team are using, and Rayquaza's long stylised face (gosh, its jaws are so enormous)!

Hahaha thank you! Glad to meet more PMD RRT fans! It's just so nice and nostalgic and everything.
Well, I'm interested in the theories! Do tell if it's ok!

Ayy thanks man! I didn't really know it'd have that effect haha! Well, I wanted to make the moves subtly obvious so I guess mission accomplished! Hahaha that was probably the part I liked the most cause faces are everything!

Well, in Rescue, your characters make decisions somewhat independently day to day, and your team is built together from the ground up with minimal guidelines and support. Your other team members are presumably filling any other roles, so it's fun to think about if you want to build a story, and it's kind of 'us against the world'.

Working under a guild or society is a little more restricting as well as being a safety net, and providesΒ a boss, senior coworkers, etc. That can be kind of a jarring change, when you're used to independence. It's even weirder in Super PMD when you start off going to a primary school and going home to a parental figure! They're still good stories, it's just a different type of content.

It also ends up in later games that the third team member becomes less relevant in favour of guild/society characters provided to you. You can't even name them or keep them consistently in Super PMD, and... that's... a shame, since they diversified/personalised teams a bit more.

Oh, also I kinda liked that the rescue teams were responding to a natural disaster crisis and were specifically out to help others (generally speaking). It appealed to me a little more than ambition. And the base! And, just. Playing RRT first meant that I invested all my emotions into it in a way that can't easily be replicated with a new self-insert-turned-character.

I agree wholeheartedly! I really enjoyed how you had all the freedom you possibly wanted in Red, and would help people out with your own will rather than doing missions because that's your life now.

I also really like how simple the story was compared to the way deeper Explorers. It's usually cause the deeper a story, the more likely there'll be faults and errors or parts people won't generally like. Though the fact you came there because "YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE IT IS YOUR DESTINY TO BLA" was something I didn't really like my second time playing.

The Gengar side arc was something I loved, because not it hinted throughout the whole story about his past and what happened, but it still gave out emotions because of the fact that he is subtly changing and becoming a better person.

Also really?? Super actually just makes you become a literal kid? That's... kinda... Well, it's something I'm not in favour with. But your comment on the stories being good reassures me slightly.

And whaddya mean by you can't name or keep them? As in recruits you can't keep or escort members?

Night-Owl8 In reply to VictheNobody [2018-03-16 23:47:43 +0000 UTC]

Good points! Yeah, it takes some real figuring out and headcanoning to explain why a human was even 'necessary' in the rescue games, let alone that one in particular, or why Gardevoir got put in the role of messenger. It's possible, but the canon doesn't help out XD Having an explanation in the later games is a plus.

Gengar's team, though unfortunately named, has a bit more nuance than Team Skull too. Exploiting the unmonitored rescue system is actually quite interesting!

Yyyep! It's pretty early stuff, but in Super, going to school sure is a thing. I tend to wonder if the player's character is really that young or if everyone assumes and the character goes along with it. I won't spoil the later stuff, but you do get out of that role and things get interesting. (I guess that's also another thing where Rescue Team is unusual - it's probably the least human-imitating setting out of the PMD games, in my opinion).

The recruitment system in Super is quite different; you gain access to Poke'mon after you complete their missions, and often they will also bring along other Poke'mon they know - it's a social network. These Poke'mon don't get nicknames, and sometimes they're unavailable for missions, because they have their own lives outside the team. It feels a bit like receiving mass recruits in exchange for personalisation. Also, some of the recruits are canon PMD characters from old games.

You can mark favourites to make them easier to sort, and there are some pretty cool aspects to the system - like, EXP is shared across the whole network apparently and often (maybe post-game, I forget) 3 Poke'mon will be announced as 'motivated': if you use those on a mission you get extra EXP. It encourages you to try new species and it is kinda fun to draw ragtag, unlikely teams adventuring together. So, yeah, there are upsides and downsides, but I sure missed having a third character I can choose permanently and name.

Yeah, that's true, but it makes me wonder if these places are just some uncharted area where Pokemon could just live in peace without the interferenceΒ of humans catching them. Well, I guess one way to explain it is because she's psychic lol, but I guess it was also possible because she sacrificed herself or something. I dunno actually now that I think about it.
I mean, the human is always there to save the day, no matter what game we're talking about, because there's no better explanation for that unless the human wished too hard upon a star to become a real Mon.

Yeah, I mean at least with his team they actually cause some huge consequences. Sure Team Skull stole apples but there was no consequence to that. The protagonists are still in the house, they haven't been driven away or anything because of their 'terrible' behaviour. With Team Meanies, they prove serious false accusations that all of the town (except the children?) believe, and they have to leave in secret before they find them and possibly kill them for their 'actions'.

That's very good hahaha. I'd like to imagine the protagonist is secretly an 80 year old man who doesn't know what's happening and has to go to school lol. Yeah, I can see your point with that! I dunno, not having the world resemble ours really makes a game more enjoyable, because it really feels like you're in a completely new environment, no?

Jeez, that doesn't really sound too good (well, from my standpoint anyway). I love nicknaming my Pokemon, but I guess they gotta have naming rights in this Universe, eh? Yeah, I read upon that too hahaha. Still, the second part makes me cheer up a bit, because that's quite an interesting mechanic. Though I'd think that it'd be a little frustrating to constantly give them EXP and keeping them 'motivated' and stuff.

Night-Owl8 In reply to VictheNobody [2018-03-18 05:20:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah come to think of it, Team Skull doesn't actually do that much - except make us mad, haha. At least it was a nice bonding moment when the other guild members shared food with the player and partner after we're wrongly punished as a result.

I like that 80 year old idea XDD I think there was an Undertale variant I read somewhere, it was pretty funny. I agree too that it's more enjoyable to play in a less humanised world, where PMD is concerned. If I was transformed it'd be a real letdown to be ushered into a structured human-like life right away.

Nicknaming team members is definitely preferable. To clarify, when the EXP is shared, I think probably everybody gets the full amount? It means the entire roster grows rather than some getting left behind (though they start at different levels). Pokemon stay motivated for one mission, and then they're done, and another three can take their place next time it comes up.

Sorry for the wait, I'm real busy right now hahaha

Indeed so, but I was expecting them for being kicked out honestly. It would've been an interesting direction.

Hahaha I can't wait to see it being executed. Just imagine the confusion and everything that'll be inflicted on the poor guy haha. Indeed, though I feel like most people would want to see themselves in a brand new area where there's a LOT to explore.

Damn, that motivation sure does run out fast, but that's a pretty interesting mechanic. I guess then no one gets kicked to the curb and everyone will become useful for a difficult situation!
