Description Directly inspired by this image by Commander-Salamander on dA: [link]

For some reason, when looking at the thumbnail I didn't see a kiwi, ass covered in stars, facing left and pecking at the grass. My brain insisted it was a quadruped monster facing right, with a svelte, greyhound-like body, hulking shoulders and no head, the front of its body covered in strange, starfish shaped sensory organs. I couldn't shake the initial impression, so I painted it in between working on commissions.

Speedpaint, it probably took about 30 minutes.

It reminded me right away of the Houndeyes from Half-Life. I loved those little guys. xD

I always had the notarget cheat on when around them.

I looked those up, that's one crazy looking critter. I can see the resemblance, funny that.

This is some really great alien biology. Makes me think of Wayne Barlowe. Not necessarily because it's much like any of his creatures, it's just how natural and alien it looks, and the clinical wildlife-art style.

Hmm, so where's its mouth? And what's the sheep doing?

Maybe one of those things is the mouth.

As for the sheep, it's chillin' out.

Oh, wow! Cool idea! The only thing I'd change about this is the distribution of the sensor organs, but that's it.

I had a similar experience looking at a photo in the National Geographic once. The photo was of a hot air balloon deflating onto the ground, but it looked to me like some sort of enormous worm type creature tied down.

The organ thingies are pretty much where the stars were, sort of random. I considered leaving out the lowest one, but then decided I liked the freakish placement. How would you do them?

I'd actually go for symmetry. As of now, its sense organs look as if they're randomly placed on only one side of its "face," which makes it seem lopsided.

Hmmm, yeah. I guess that would make it more logical - I think I thought of it as more monstrous. Ah well!

Awesome! This happens to me quite often. Sometimes I'll see a creature at a distance and think "dammit, I wish I'd come up with that!"...then on closer inspection of the image, it turns out that I DID!

The monster named William in my "Creature Recognition Chart" started that way. I saw an old Japanese ink painting in a slideshow in an art history class, and thought I saw that monster. It was actually a pair of snow monkeys cuddled together. Weirdly, I once showed the drawing to somebody who recognized instantly that it was inspired by that particular Japanese ink painting.

Before I got Lasik, it happened to me all the time - nearisghtedness + astigmatism = monsters. Once I was convinced I saw gremlins cavorting on a neighbor's car.
